Newly crowned Shannons Australian Production Car Champion David Ryan has not let the title get to him, and has continued his domination of qualifying with another pole at Oran Park today – his 12th consecutive top qualifier.

Driving the championship winning Shell/Armour Auto Ford Falcon XR6 Turbo, Ryan was fastest yet again, this time on 1m20.5595, some 1.1 seconds faster than the Time Mutual Finance Corporation Holden Commodore VZ SS of Steve Briffa.

The latter missed the last round at Queensland Raceway due to engine problems and it seems as though he is not out of the woods there. “I hold the lap record here but can’t get near those times – we are certainly down on power,” Briffa said.

Third fastest in both the outright and Class A stakes was Leigh Mertens aboard the G&D Performance/Quadrant Commodore SSZ which was experiencing computer related glitches in the build up practice session.

Next was the Wesfil/Dayco Falcon XR6 Turbo of Nick Dunkley while the 2005 champion Colin Osborne in his Class B Toyota Celica (1m24.2289), edged ahead of Chris Delfsma’s Century 21 Falcon XR8.

Starting from the third row would be Osborne’s Celica team mate Trevor Keene along with fellow Class B Toyota runner, Allan Shephard in the Thrifty Car Rentals machine.

Returning after a long absence from the category, Len Cave steered the Top Dollar Metal Recyclers Honda Integra Type R to ninth outright and first of Class B Trophy on 1m24.9600, just edging class rival Rob Rubis’ On Track Motorsports BMW 323i.

Newcomer Shane Smollens was next in the Class BT Midwest Multimedia Toyota MR2 clear of the Class A Trophy Falcon AU XR8 of Matt Brady.

In the absence of Class C champion Darren Best, David Mertens was the fastest of the class on 1m29.6414 but Amber Anderson was not far away in the Toyota Sportivo Echo – less than a tenth of a second in fact.

Narrow missing out on a qualifying run was John Houlder as his InTune Motorsport Falcon XR8 had to have its clutch replaced and would start race one from the back of the grid.
