Marshall charges up the order on the streets of Hamilton PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 19 April 2008
IRWIN Racing’s Marcus Marshall has battled back from a tough V8 Supercar qualifying session to finish 16th in the opening race of the Hamilton 400 in New Zealand.

A rain shower and a slow competitor interrupted his fastest lap ruined any chance of a strong qualifying performance from Marshall. He was forced to start the race in 26th position.

From the outset the race was full of drama. A multi-car collision on just the second corner blocked the path for Marshall. Fortunately he didn’t suffer any damage and he put his head down after his compulsory tyre stop.

A brake-balance issue dropped his pace, but once that was sorted late in the race Marshall was able to charge through to 16th at the finish.

“It felt like an endurance race, it was long and there was quite a lot of attrition,” said Marshall.

“This track really takes not prisoners, any mistake is punished.

“We continually worked on tuning the car throughout the race. We’ll get on top of that tomorrow and work on having a consistent car throughout the race.

“My goal for the weekend is a top-15 finish for the round. Even though there was lot of attrition in that race, 16th was a fair indication of where we are right now.

“At a place like this you really feel sorry for the car. You have to drive it hard, but you have to keep it clean. A lot of guys are attacking the curbs and although that’s the faster way, seeing guys with punctures and broken suspension is no surprise soon after is not a surprise.”

The final two races of the Hamilton 400 will be held tomorrow.
