The classic HQ Holden battle returns to Morgan Park Raceway on August 26/27, with a bumper field of cars set for battle.
The racing so far in 2006 has been close and hard, with two first time winners at Morgan Park last time out, adding spice to the championship chase.
HQ contender John Fullerton will be one to look out for.
“Morgan Park is an excellent track for HQ Holdens.
“I like racing at Morgan Park, every time I come out here there is
something new, and the facility is always improving,” said Fullerton,
whose FX Theme Team cars are amongst the best presented in any
championship class.
“It is one thing that we are trying to do, not only bring up the
presentation of the cars, but also image of HQs, which will make it
much easier, not only from a spectator point of view, but also from a
sponsors standpoint.
“The HQs are very competitive, it's been pretty close all season long.
“I've been in the class for five years now, and every year everyone
seems to step up to a much higher level, and the progress is very good
for the future of the category.”
President of the HQ Racing Association Queensland Ian Mundell typifies the commitment of the HQ racers to their sport.
“It's a 700km trip down to Morgan Park from our Rockhampton base, and I wouldn't miss it for anything,” said Mundell.
“To set up a car for Morgan Park Raceway, it's a combination of horsepower and handling.
“You need some low down torque because of the tight corners, so there
is a bit off setting up with engine tuning, also having the correct
tyre pressures is important as well, because it can be a bit greasy
when there hasn't been much racing on it.
'It's certainly an exciting track, we love it.” Currently Toowomba
racer and 2005 series champion Gary Bonwick is the man to beat,
especially after a strong showing at the recent national meeting in
Darwin.
However there will be a strong line up of contenders ready to take
Bonwick's mantle, with second placed Michael McCloud well positioned.
“HQ Holdens is the kind of category where driving skill comes into it,
everything is heavily controlled and restricted, the emphasis is on
driver ability, and that's what we like about it,” said McCloud.
The HQ Holdens are just one class on an action packed programme, with a
total of ten classes hitting the track for four races each over the
weekend.
Spectator viewing is available around Morgan Park Raceway, with viewing even possible from the comfort of your own car!
