Tom Onslow-Cole has achieved the first HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championship pole position of his career in qualifying at Donington Park. The 20-year-old from New Malden, Surrey set the pole with a best lap of 1m12.140s in his Vauxhall Vectra VXR.
Second fastest with a time of 1m12.219s was the diesel-powered SEAT Leon TDI of Jason Plato who became a father earlier in the week. Third - making it three different makes of car in the top three - was Colin Turkington's Team RAC BMW 320si.

onslow_cole.jpgOnslow-Cole said: "I'm back in the rebuilt car I had a big smash in at Brands Hatch in March and it feels just like new. I've clicked with it straight away and of course I'm delighted with the result.

"It was a bit nerve-wracking at the end... I'd got the best out of my tyres so just had to hope nobody would go any quicker. Jason got very close, but I guess I did just enough in the end."

Meanwhile, the two championship leaders Fabrizio Giovanardi and Mat Jackson had far from ideal qualifying sessions. Reigning champion Giovanardi salvaged eighth place near the end of the session after having all his earlier times disallowed when his Vectra failed a ride height check.

Jackson, second in the standings having won last time out at Rockingham, was back in 14th in his BMW.

Jason Plato has given a diesel-powered car - SEAT's Leon TDI - a first ever win in the HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championship with victory in the first of today's three rounds at the Donington Park circuit in Leicestershire.

In an incident-packed race that required two safety car periods, Plato - who became a father in the week - took the lead off Vauxhall driver Tom Onslow-Cole in the closing stages for his first win of 2008. Plato also set a new race lap record.jason_plato.jpg

Finishing second and third were the Vauxhall Vectra VXRs of Matt Neal and Onslow-Cole who had started the race on pole position.

In the title race, points leader Fabrizio Giovanardi recovered from a pit stop to check over his Vectra to finish eighth. Nearest rival Mat Jackson - poised to close right in on him - crashed out of fifth place in his BMW in a collision with Tom Chilton's Team Halfords Honda Civic.

As a result, Giovanardi still leads the standings but up to second is Neal ahead of Team Halfords' Gordon Shedden and Jackson who has slumped to fourth.

The second of today's rounds is scheduled to start at 2.20pm.

Leading positions, BTCC race 1 Donington Park (provisional):

1. Jason Plato (GBR), SEAT Sport UK/SEAT Leon TDI, 18 laps in 25m08.830s
2. Matt Neal (GBR), VX Racing/Vauxhall Vectra VXR, +1.309s
3. Tom Onslow-Cole (GBR), VX Racing/Vauxhall Vectra VXR, +1.602s
Fastest lap: Plato, 1m12.677s (96.95mph) NEW LAP RECORD

giovanardi.jpgFabrizio Giovanardi has won the second of today's three HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championship rounds at Donington Park to increase his lead in the series.

Giovanardi, starting from eighth on the grid, mastered a track made greasy by light drizzle to move to the front by mid-distance and from there was never headed. The Italian also set the race's fastest lap in his Vauxhall Vectra VXR.

Race one winner Jason Plato finished second in his SEAT Leon TDI ahead of Giovanardi's team-mate Tom Onslow-Cole in third.

Vauxhall's Matt Neal had looked to be on course for third - a position which would have consolidated his second in the standings - but he crashed out with a lap to go.

As a result, he has dropped to fourth in the championship behind Plato and Team Halfords' Gordon Shedden, but going into this afternoon's third race Giovanardi now holds a commanding 18-point advantage at the top of the table.

BTCC race 2 result Donington Park (provisional):

2. Jason Plato (GBR), SEAT Sport UK/SEAT Leon TDI, +2.880s
3. Tom Onslow-Cole (GBR), VX Racing/Vauxhall Vectra VXR, +7.236s

Darren Turner has won the third of today’s three HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championship rounds at the Donington Park circuit in Leicestershire.

Turner, driving a diesel-powered SEAT Leon TDI, led every lap although came under increasing pressure from the closing Vauxhall Vectra VXR of Tom Onslow-Cole in the final stages.turner.jpg

Onslow-Cole, who set the race’s fastest lap, finished second ahead of SEAT’s Jason Plato and his own Vauxhall team-mate Fabrizio Giovanardi.

Moving to the next three rounds at Thruxton, Hampshire on 18 May, Giovanardi leads the standings by 16 points from Plato.

2. Tom Onslow-Cole (GBR), VX Racing/Vauxhall Vectra VXR, +1.426s

3. Jason Plato (GBR), SEAT Sport UK/SEAT Leon TDI, +3.003s

Fastest lap: Onslow-Cole, 1m13.937s (95.29mph)

Points (provisional):
1. Fabrizio Giovanardi (ITA), 91 points

3. Matt Neal (GBR), 64

Jason Plato, Fabrizio Giovanardi and Darren Turner shared the three victories in today's HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championship rounds  at Donington Park.

Plato and Turner made history by becoming the first drivers to win races in the BTCC with a car powered by diesel - namely SEAT's Leon TDI - but it is Vauxhall's Giovanardi, the reigning champion, who leaves the Leicestershire circuit in command of the points table as Britain's premier motor racing series now moves on to Thruxton in Hampshire for its rounds there on Sunday 18 May.

Plato was today's big winner - he arrived at Donington only sixth in the points standings but has now risen to second to challenge Giovanardi who narrowly beat him to last year's title.

His win in today's first race was followed by second and third place results to complete what has been a busy period in his life having become a father earlier in the week.

Italian Giovanardi, who took eighth and fourth place finishes either side of his race two victory in his Vauxhall Vectra VXR, said: "It's getting like 2007 again with me and Jason at the front but there are so many drivers who could still come into the title race - some of them had bad luck today and they could easily be up there fighting with us. OK, maybe I beat Jason at Thruxton last year but this time it is going to be very equal. SEAT has got the diesel working strongly. I expect a very big fight there."

Oxford-based Plato commented: "We've now pretty much hit the sweet spot with the Leon TDI and Darren and I really feel we can give the Vauxhalls a fight, but there will be other drivers who will play a factor not just at Thruxton but for the remainder of the season. Congratulations to SEAT, though - the team has transformed the car's performance in the last six weeks and we've had a really strong day today. And now we're right back in it with my old mate Fabrizio."

A measure of the BTCC's competitiveness is the fact that Turner's race three win makes him the seventh different driver in just nine rounds to stand on the top step of the podium. He remains fifth in the standings but is right behind third and fourth-placed drivers, Vauxhall's Matt Neal and Team Halfords' Gordon Shedden. Slumping from second to sixth after a difficult day is BMW Dealer Team UK driver Mat Jackson who has also been replaced as the leading Independent driver by Adam Jones.

Team Air Cool SEAT Leon driver Jones crossed the line as the leading privateer in race three, but only after the John Guest Racing Honda Integra of Andrew Jordan had masterfully taken the honours in both races one and two.

Meanwhile, Vauxhall - whose third driver Tom Onslow-Cole achieved podium finishes in all three races having topped Saturday's qualifying session - continues to lead SEAT in the Manufacturers' standings, albeit by the reduced margin of just 15 points. Its VX Racing squad also remains ahead in the Teams' championship. Jones' Air Cool outfit has moved to the top of the Independent Teams' table.
