(with thanks to Ciara Conlon) Championship contender, Barry Johnson pulled his entry on the morning of the rally. Pressure problems with the gearbox and centre differential on his ex Petter Solberg Subaru Impreza WRC would have slowed the car considerably and Barry took the decision to pull out of the event on grounds of safety. Organisers had to cancel the final stage of the National event, Resolven, with the loss of 16 competitive miles. A fire in the forest meant it was impossible to run the stage. Dust was a major problem on the opening loop of two stages. Every driver complained about large dust clouds hanging in the forests making it virtually impossible to see in some parts. The organisers of the rally decided to move to two minute gaps in an effort to improve the situation. It worked as the majority of top drivers said it totally transformed the event. Fashion victim Steve Perez proudly displayed his ‘Cool Shirt’ at the weekend. In a throwback to his rapidly disintegrating youth, perhaps the former champion got ideas from his recent visit to the Caribbean for the Barbados Rally Carnival… Talking of Steve Perez, the Swansea Bay event could have been his last we’ve seen of him this season in the Championship given he’s considering not contesting the final two ANCRO events. 206 Super Cup driver Mike Harris retired on SS1 but his service crew stayed on to help out with the running of fellow 206 Cup driver Declan Magee’s car for the remainder of the day. They helped to change the sump at last service and kept Declan in the rally. Max Utting is looking for a co-driver’s seat for the next round of the ANCRO Championship as father Wug is not contesting the Park Systems Stages. CREW BY CREW REPORT – National Roger Duckworth/Mark Broomfield (Subaru Impreza WRC) Led the event from SS3 and had a 0.6 second lead going into SS4, Rhondda . Lost over 40 seconds when they overshot a K-right junction. They dropped to fourth overall, the position they held for the remainder of the event. Crossed the finish ramp nearly a minute behind winner Marcus Dodd and four seconds ahead of Steve Perez. Claimed third place championship points which now leave them ahead in the overall standings, five points in front of Anthony Willmington. Marcus Dodd/Andrew Bargery (Hyundai Accent WRC) Set top three times on every stage and was just under five seconds behind Craig Middleton and Robin Hernaman going into the final stage. Won the event by just over three seconds from the Norwegian crew Andreas Mikkelsen and Ola Floene and over eight seconds ahead of Middleton. Scored maximum championship points to leave them fifth overall in the series after five rounds. Craig Middleton/Robin Hernaman (Hyundai Accent WRC) Briefly slid off stage one SS1 and stalled the Hyundai Accent WRC. Dropped sixteen seconds to stage winner, Julian Reynolds and were fourth overall going into SS2. Took the lead of the event after SS4, where Roger Duckworth encountered his problems. Held onto their lead until after the penultimate stage and had a near five second advantage going into the six mile Tyle stage. However, a quarter of the way through the stage, they hit the back of the car, badly damaging the wheel. Finished in third place overall and scored second place championship points and now sits in third overall in the series, twelve points behind Duckworth. Steve Perez/Scott Martin (Ford Focus WRC) Struggled with the dust through the opening loop of two stages and was in sixth place going into first service. Set a consistent pace through the remaining four stages but hit a chicane on the final test. “It was a little tighter than it should have been and we hit the right side of the car.” Crossed the finish ramp in fifth place, four seconds behind Roger Duckworth and thirty seconds ahead of Richard Gower. Richard Gower/Aled Davies (Hyundai Accent WRC) Suffered an “off” on SS1 and had his Hyundai WRC up on two wheels on SS2. Arrived into first service in seventh place overall. Moved up one place on the leader board over the remaining four stages and crossed the finish ramp in sixth place overall. Bob Ceen/Andy Bull (Subaru Impreza WRC) Had a short lived rally, retiring five miles into the opening stage, Resolven 1 with a blown turbo. Stephen Petch/Michael Wilkinson (Mitsubishi Lancer GpN) Stopped on the first run through Walters to help Paul Wedgbury put out his engine fire. Was awarded a notional time of 4:19.5 and was fifth GpN going into first service. Had an encounter with a bank while flat in fifth gear on SS4 and ripped off the rear bumper. Set quickest GpN time through the final four stages to take second in the category behind Julian Reynolds. As Julian is not a registered competitor in the ANCRO series, Stephen and Michael claimed maximum GpN points. Also scored maximum Mitsubishi Evo Cup points and Stephen also picked up maximum points in the Junior championship. Paul Wedgbury/Neil Dashfield (Impreza B13) Were sixth quickest through the opening stage but retired on SS2, the first run through Walter’s Arena with an engine bay fire. Alistair Tough/Alistair Mackay (Impreza GpN)Struggled quite badly on the opening loop of two stages with dust from the car in front. Received a notional time for stage two after being held up at Paul Wedgbury’s fire. Suffered a couple of spins through SS4 and SS5 and finished the event thirteenth overall and sixth GpN. Holds seventh place in the overall standings, four points behind Wyn Humphries and three points ahead of Steve Perez. Anthony Willmington/Andy White (Mitsubishi GpN) No real dramas throughout the day and enjoyed the stages thoroughly. Finished the event just outside the top ten, and fourth in GpN. Picked up third place championship GpN points and second place Mitsubishi Evo Cup points. His consistent run over all five rounds so far means the Anthony and Andy are second overall in the championship, five points behind Roger Duckworth. Rob Smith/Alun Cook (Impreza GpN)Quickest ANCRO registered GpN car through the opening two stages and was sixteen seconds ahead of Anthony Willmington going into first service. Dropped time through the final stage, SS6 with a broken exhaust manifold but finished tenth overall, third in GpN, second registered ANCRO GpN and first in the Subaru GpN Trophy section of the event. Peter Egerton/Simon Staddon (Hyundai Accent WRC) Swansea Bay was their first time in the car in over seven weeks and found it hard to get back into a rhythm right away. Lost paddle gear change on their Hyundai Accent WRC on the second loop of stages and had to revert to stick gear shift. Finished fifteenth overall and sixth in class B13. Wyn Humphries/Mark Lewis (Impreza GpN) Had a faultless event over all six stages. Finished fourteenth overall, fifth ANCRO registered GpN, third Subaru GpN Trophy and second Junior driver. Holds sixth place overall in the championship, second in GpN and extends his lead in the Junior series. Jon Ausobski/Anne Watson (Impreza) Retired on SS5 with transmission failure. Paul James/Derek Davies (Mitsubishi GpN) Finished the event just outside the top twenty after a steady run through the six stages. Crossed the finish line eighth registered GpN driver and third in the Mitsubishi Evo Cup. Wug Utting/Max Utting (Impreza GpN) Crossed the finish line in nineteenth place overall, seventh ANCRO GpN and fifth in the Subaru GpN Trophy. The battle between Wug and Paul James went Wug’s way this time but the battle will resume on the Park Systems Rally in September. Andrew Pawley/Tim Sturla (Impreza GpN) Had a frustrating run through the opening loop, losing a contact lens on the opening stage. Finished in eighteenth place overall, seven seconds ahead of Wug Utting. Emma McKinstry/Kenny Hull (Mitsubishi GpN) Her car began to overheat on the way to the opening stage. A blown fuse for the fans was discovered and changed. Lost approximately 40 seconds on SS5 when they rolled over onto its side. A rather dented looking Mitsubishi Evo crossed the finish ramp in twenty-second place, fourth Mitsubishi Evo Cup and first lady driver. Colin Britton/Ross Butler (Peugeot 206)Bent a wishbone on SS5 and dropped valuable time. Finished the event five seconds adrift of class leader and 206 Cup driver Declan Magee. Declan Magee/Thomas Nugent (Peugeot 206) Led class A6 and the 206 Super Cup categories from the outset despite damaging the sump on SS5. Crossed the line five seconds ahead of class and Cup rival Colin Britton. Miles Johnston/Tony Graham (Peugeot 206) Went off stage on SS1 and were unable to continue in the rally. Jonathon Sparks/Bradley Magnus (Mitsubishi GpN) Had a steady run through the stages and crossed the finish ramp in twenty-fifth overall and fifth in the Mitsubishi Evo Cup category. Matthew Owen/Ian Bevan (Impreza GpN) Retired from the rally in SS4. Allan McDowall/Gavin Heseltine (Opel Kadett) Finished the event 30th overall and first in class B11 Trevor Martin/Ray Cleghorn (Impreza GpN) Had a bit of a “hairy scary moment through the trees” on SS1. Improved the rhythm throughout the event and crossed the finish ramp in 28th place. Picked up sixth place Subaru GpN Trophy points. Mike Harris/Ben Garrod (Peugeot 206) Retired with engine problems on the opening stage. Harry Dodd/Roy Campbell (Hyundai Accent WRC)Had a good day but not enough mileage. “Shame we lost the last stage.” Finished the event twentieth overall and eighth in class B13. Gareth Bevan/Neil Bevan (Mitsubishi GpN) Another learning curve for the Bevan brothers. Finished twenty-ninth overall and sixth in the Mitsubishi Evo Cup section. THEY SAID WHAT… “We avoided the lake this year thankfully…!” Marcus Dodd was relieved to have passed the spot where his Hyundai WRC ended up last year. “Heart tainting moments everywhere!!” Anthony Willmington recalls the difficult conditions on the opening loop. “I’ve a bet on with Paul James. A pint per second. At the moment, I’m 27 seconds up on him so far so that’s looking a cheap night…” Wug Utting will possibly have the hangover from hell after that lot. “I think that’s 11 pints now…” Paul James pulled 18 seconds back from Utting over the remainder of the rally. The hangover may not be quite as bad now but still a cheap night. “No boost, no anti-lag and I’ve lost a contact lens. I’m a bit of a one-eyed jack at the minute not that it makes much difference as you can’t see a thing in the dust anyway!!” Andy Pawley describes his opening two stages. “We had the bad luck in the last rally, Mike seems to be getting it today” Martin Laverty on hearing that fellow 206 1400 Challenge driver Mike Winfield encountered some problems on the opening loop. “We came into a hairpin left, clipped a rock and rolled the car. We landed back on our wheels so I jammed it into first and kept going. We had no brakes for the rest of the stage so that’s probably why we were quick.” Owen Murphy describes his escapades on the final stage of the day. Despite rolling his Fiesta and causing a bit of damage, he went on to set second quickest Fiesta time on the stage. Dave the Teddy was back in William Mavitty’s car and he must be a good omen as William explained: “The three times he has been in the car, we’ve finished.” “That damn bird should have been barbequed.” No names being mentioned, but someone was obviously not impressed with the rare bird that nested in Resolven and caused havoc with the rally in the weeks leading up to the event. “I don’t mind taking bad luck every now and then!” Craig Middleton at the finish after he lost the lead and the event win on the final stage. “The craic is, we’re going to have lots of Bacardi tonight” Declan Magee at the finish after scoring maximum points in the 206 Super Cup section of the event. “We lost about 40 seconds and a few other things by the looks of it…” Emma McKinstry assesses the damage to her Evo after a roll on SS5.
SUPPORTING CLASSES
Mitsubishi Ralliart Evolution Cup North Yorkshire rising star Stephen Petch claimed his first maximum points haul of the season with a comprehensive victory on the fifth round of the series. Driving the SGP Motorsport Lancer, the Scorton near Richmond driver saw off the challenge of Anthony Willmington from Dorchester with Ilminster’s Paul James coming home in third position. Fourth went the way of Emma McKinstry (Banbridge) for the second event in a row, with Jonathan Sparks (Keinton) and Welshman Gareth Bevan completing the top six. With main rival Tony Thompson missing his second successive event and Petch non-finishing on two previous rounds, Wilmington holds a healthy ten points advantage at the head of the championship over Thompson with Petch and Paul James lurking menacingly if ‘Wilmo’ slips up on the remaining two rounds. Wilmington ’s result consolidated his lead at the head of the Innovation Motorsports Challenge Cup ahead of Culloden’s Alistair Tough with Welshman Wyn Humphries in third. Subaru GpN Trophy Towcester driver Rob Smith claimed his second successive victory by clinching the honours ahead of Scotsman Alistair Tough with Aberdyfi’s Wyn Humphreys claiming yet another third place finish. Fourth home was Coalville’s Andrew Pawley ahead of Wug Utting (Smallfield) with Medstead driver Trevor Martin completing the top six. At the head of the championship, Humphries holds a slender one point lead over Tough with Smith a further five points further back after not contesting the Manx event. TMS Peugeot 206 Cup For the first time this season, Fermanagh’s Declan Magee took outright victory to move his title ambitions up a gear but with fellow Ulsterman Colin Britton claiming runner up spot, the pair are tied at the head of the standings. Miles Johnston’s first retirement of the season saw him slip to third in the standings with Michael Harris a safe fourth ahead of Jamie Hickman and Colm Cronin. Moved up to sixth overall and fifth Fiesta after SS3 but was hindered by another puncture on the final stage, Resolven. Finished the rally in fifth place and fourth Fiesta. Owen Murphy/Paul Williams (Fiesta ST) Had to come to a complete stop three times on SS3 due to the clouds of dust. Also overshot a square left and dropped some time. Held eighth place overall and seventh in the Fiestas going into final service. Rolled on the last stage but landed back on the wheels and kept going, setting second quickest Fiesta time in the process. A rather battered looking car made it back to the finish ramp to claim seventh overall in the rally and sixth place in the Fiestas. Chris Moore/Richard Edwards (Fiesta ST) Made a wrong tyre choice on the opening loop of two stages and were in fifth place overall and fourth in the Fiesta Sorting Trophy section of the rally going into first service. A second quickest time overall through the final stage moved them up the leader board to second place and first Fiesta. They crossed the finish ramp four seconds ahead of Jonathon Greer and Killian Duffy. The result shows Chris and Richard leading the ANCRO Clubmans championship overall with two rounds left to go. Dan Taylor/Andy Connibear (Fiesta ST) Chose the wrong compound of tyre for the back on the first loop which made handling rather difficult. Backed off slightly through the tighter sections of the stages. As the day went on their tyres were working better and they finished the event in fifteenth place overall and twelfth Fiesta. Colin Greer/Neil Ewing (Fiesta ST) Led the Fiesta section of the rally from the outset. Set some very impressive times through the opening two stages and held a twenty eight second advantage over nearest Fiesta rival Jonathon Greer going into the final stage. However, a broken drive shaft hindered their progress through the stage and although they made it back to the finish ramp, they lost too much time and dropped to eighth place overall and seventh in the Fiesta section of the rally. Tom Walster/Kirsty Riddick (Fiesta ST) Caught a car on SS2 and had to deal with a lot of dust. They were quickest through SS3 and were fourth overall and third Fiesta going into the final stage. They held on to their placing to the finish and collected third place Fiesta points. Mike Faulkner/Steve Clark (Fiesta ST) Struggled through the opening two stages and made a few errors which resulted in some time loss. Retired from the event on SS5 with a broken ball joint. Fraser Jones/Inbal Edry (Fiesta ST) Had a brief encounter with a ditch and some “boondash” on SS2 and they were thirteenth overall and eleventh in the Fiestas going into first service. A quick time through stage three moved them up two places with one stage remaining. Finished the event in tenth overall and ninth of the Fiesta Sporting Trophy competitors. Chris Peart/Gordon Blyth (Satria kit car) Took a commanding lead in class two from the outset with some very impressive stage times. Finished the event just outside the top twenty and first in class by nearly three minutes. William Mavitty/Mark Ammands (Fiesta ST) Had a major problem with dust getting into the cabin of the car through throughout the day. This caused major problems with visibility from within the car. Fitted a new engine before the event and the performance improved as the rally went on. Finished the event in seventeenth place overall and fourteenth in the Fiestas. Colin Hope/Nick Patrick (Nova) Had a faultless and very enjoyable run through the four stages. Took the lead of class one after SS3 and finished the event with a four minute lead over their nearest class rival, Mike Winfield and Andy McGowan. Richard Moore/Suzanne Emiliani (Fiesta ST) Were held up behind a BMW on SS1 and had to come to a complete stop due to the clouds of dust. Dropped back to 34th overall and 18th Fiesta going into first service. Steadily climbed up the leader board to finish the event in twenty fourth place and fifteenth in the Fiestas. Nick Kelly/John Travers (Escort MK4) Had a trouble free run through all four stages and they took their Escort to second in class two and 40th overall. Mike Winfield/Andy McGowan (206 1400) Took victory in the 206 1400 Challenge section of the rally despite some heavy time loss early in the event. Suffered a puncture on SS2, three miles into the six mile stage. Also had an electrical problem which made their 206 cut out intermittently. They were forty seconds adrift of Martin Laverty after two stages but they managed to pull back this time over the next two stages to finish second in class and win the 206 section by just under two seconds. Winston Clarke/Rob Allen (Escort RS2000) Finished the event eighth in class three and 43rd overall after an “enjoyable event” Martin Laverty/Andrew Roughead (206 1400) Led the 206 1400 challenge section of the event after two stages and had a lead of nearly forty seconds going into first service. Had nearly a thirty second advantage over Mike Winfield going into the final stage where they dropped Kevin Blackford/Andy Pecover (Mini) Rolled their Mini on SS3.
