British Drviers To Battle For DPRAC Honour At Donington PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 24 July 2006
British drivers in the Formula Renault UK with Michelin Championship will be racing towards an additional prize during rounds 11 and 12 at Donington Park National circuit on Sunday 30th July. The Donington Park Racing Association Club (DPRAC) will present the DPRAC Cup to the British driver scoring the most points at the circuit this season, with four rounds due to be held at the Derbyshire circuit.

In addition to this weekend’s two races, the cream of British single-seater racers will return to the circuit as part of the World Series by Renault weekend on 9th/10th September. The British driver with the highest points aggregate from the four rounds will win the DPRAC Cup, which is being presented to a Formula Renault UK driver for the very first time.

Ahead of the first visit of the season to the Midlands track, Fortec Motorsport duo James Sutton (New Barnet, Herts) and Sam Bird (Claygate, Surrey) are leading the British charge in the series, behind Irish leader Patrick Hogan (Killiney, Co Dublin). AKA Lemac’s Jeremy Metcalfe (Fleet, Hants) and Scorpio Motorsport’s Will Bratt (Banbury, Oxon) will also be confident of staking a strong claim for the DPRAC Cup. In total, 16 drivers are eligible to win the award.

The DPRAC evolved from the Donington Park Independent Supporters Club, which was formed in 1973 to support current circuit owner Tom Wheatcroft's campaign to bring motor racing back to Donington Park. Wheatcroft achieved his goal in 1977, but, rather than disbanding, the members decided that the DPRAC should live on in the form of an independent supporters' club, run by the members.

It awards six trophies each year and is also very active on the welfare front through its Welfare fund, a registered charity, and last year bought nearly £2000 worth of equipment for the circuit medical centre and emergency teams. The club also assist injured competitors at the circuit who are hospitalised.

Commenting on the announcement, Championship Manager Simon North said: “Renault UK has always had an affinity with Donington Park as it was our ‘home’ circuit when racing the Renault 5 Championship back in the 1980s. It is a circuit we always enjoy visiting and are delighted to be coming here twice in one season, with an added incentive for our young British drivers.”
