Motor Sports Association (MSA) British Race Elite star Alexander Sims heads
to the fastest circuit on the Formula Renault UK calendar, Thruxton in
Hampshire, next weekend, 17th/18th May, for rounds seven and eight of the 2008
season.
Currently fourth overall in the driver standings, with two podium finishes
and one pole position to his credit so far this year, Alexander has accrued a
consistent number of points at each race meeting but is now aiming to up the
ante and achieve his first victory of the campaign.
“We’re aiming for wins again, the same way we go into any race weekend”,
said the Wansford based 20-year-old, “During the Thruxton test last month we
didn’t produce our best performance and when we did try a change on the car, it
snowed!
“Unfortunately that meant we couldn’t try what we wanted but hopefully
we’ll be in a half decent position for qualifying next weekend and then build
from there. Being a second year driver, if I can’t be on pole position for both
races I’m still confident I’ll be able to fight among the top three and achieve
some good results.”
While freely admitting Thruxton hasn’t been one of his stronger venues,
Alexander remains confident of taking the fight to his main championship rivals
during rounds seven and eight.
That’s particularly true on the back of a stunning performance during the
second of the Donington Park races last weekend where he reeled off half a dozen
fastest laps without reply from any of his rivals. He went on, of course, to end
round six in third position having driven beautifully from sixth place on the
grid.
If Alexander can leave Hampshire next Sunday night with a brace of podium
results under his belt, the Manor Competition ace will be delighted as he is
highly confident the remaining tracks on the 2008 calendar are all ones which
suit him well.
He continued: “Thruxton is one of our weaker tracks but then we visit some
circuits where I’m very confident we’ll be strong. Silverstone Grand Prix
Circuit, Silverstone National Circuit, Oulton Park, Snetterton and Croft –
they’re all tracks where we should do very well.
“Although Thruxton is perhaps not our strongest track for outright pace, in
the races I think we’ll be fine. I’m raring to go, that’s for sure, I want to
get as many points in the bag as possible and hopefully that’ll be with a couple
of podiums.”
Qualifying for rounds seven and eight of the 2008 Formula Renault UK
Championship will take place on Saturday, 17th May, at 09.25 and 15.10
respectively. Both races will follow on Sunday, 18th May, with round seven
timetabled to start at 11.35 and round eight scheduled to get underway at
16.00.
Meanwhile, highlights of the second round of the season – which took place
at Brands Hatch in Kent at the end of March – will be featured on the Motorsport
UK magazine programme on Freeview, digital satellite and cable channel ITV4 at
17.00 this coming Tuesday, 13th May.
