The Airwaves Ducati team returned to Brands Hatch today for the re-scheduled
round one event. With temperatures reaching 27 degrees the Superbikes were out
on track for two 30 minute practice sessions.
Shane Byrne was quickest in
both practices with his fastest time of 1:27.158 coming in the first session. He
then completed 21 laps, more than any other competitor, in second practice
whilst consistently recording sub 1:28 times. Having already qualified in pole
position for tomorrow’s races Shane is looking to repeat his double winning
performance of Oulton Park.
“I am pleased that I was fastest in free practice but I am not so happy that my
lap times are way off. The Airwaves Ducati is pretty much the same as it was
when we were here a month ago but our lap times are nowhere near what they were
that weekend and I can guarantee it’s not for the lack of trying! I am losing
the time on corner exits and I am not sure if it is the heat or something else
but the grip just isn’t there. It was a one-two for Airwaves Ducati in the
second session though which is great and I start on pole position tomorrow so
hopefully we can give the Airwaves Ducati fans something to cheer
about!”
Leon’s times improved throughout the day with his fastest lap of
1:27.386 briefly taking the lead from his team mate in second practice. Shane
then bettered it by 0.121 seconds in the closing minutes of the session,
resulting in a 2nd place for Leon.
Leon commented; “I am feeling a lot
better, we have changed a few things on my Airwaves Ducati and I am feeling much
more comfortable with it now. Physically I feel good and after my result at
Oulton Park I am a lot more confident about my race fitness. Tomorrow I want to
get a good start so I can get away with the front runners and push for a podium
finish.”
