David Epton Donington Park National Preview PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 21 July 2006
Scorpio Motorsport’s David Epton arrives at the team’s local circuit, Donington Park in Leicestershire, just six days from now aiming to kick-off the second half of the season with his first ever Formula Renault UK category podium.

While last weekend’s race meeting at Croft in North Yorkshire didn’t quite work out the way the 25-year-old race ace had hoped, confidence remains high ahead of Rounds 11 and 12 of the season which take place on 29th/30th July.

The Preston-based star, who is sponsored throughout 2006 by Bombardier Learjet, Universal Weather & Aviation Inc and Jet Air International Lebanon & Germany, ran strongly in the top four earlier this season at Thruxton and is sure the Donington Park races will see a welcome return to the same level of performance.

“I’m looking forward to Donington and I think we have a good chance of a podium finish”, commented David, “It’ll be nice to be back at a circuit I know quite well. I’d never been to Knockhill before Rounds Seven and Eight, yet we still finished in the top six in the second race, and I’d only ever done a few miles at Croft before last weekend’s races.

“Donington should see us have more of the kind of pace we had at Thruxton earlier in the year and I hope we’ll have the car to be fast enough to run in the top six. If it all clicks in qualifying though, we stand a great chance of being in the top three and certainly challenging for a podium result.

“At Croft we made things difficult for ourselves after a bad qualifying and Croft is a very narrow track which makes successful overtaking extremely difficult. We need to make sure we qualify well at Donington to give ourselves a chance of achieving the sort of result we know we’re capable of. I like Donington, it has some fantastic corners and is a circuit where you need a nice rhythm to be fast. I’m very much looking forward to it.”

On Tuesday and Wednesday this week David, who originally hails from Fleet in Hampshire, was present at the world-famous Farnborough International Airshow on behalf of key sponsor Bombardier Learjet.

His Apotex Pharmaceuticals Scorpio Motorsport race car was positioned alongside examples of Bombardier’s Learjet and Global aircraft in the Business Aviation Park Zone of the show.

The display of David’s car together with Bombardier business jets garnered an incredible amount of attention from the many trade and business customers, and provided an excellent example of that inextricable link between business aviation and motor racing.

Now the Farnborough Air Show is over, David’s attention returns to the Formula Renault UK Championship with pre-event testing taking place at Donington on Thursday, 27th July, ahead of qualifying on Saturday, 29th July – the Round 11 session starting at 10.35 and Round 12 qualifying set to begin at 15.10.

Both races, which will be broadcast live on Motors TV, take place on Sunday, 30th July, with Round 11 timetabled to get underway at 09.10, and Round 12 scheduled to start at 14.20. Sky Digital viewers can access Motors TV on channel 413 while NTL customers will be able to watch the races live on channel 173.
