Joshua Scott, the youngest competitor at just 16 years of age in the Australian Formula Ford Championship has set the early pace with the fastest time in today's practice sessions at Queensland Raceway.
Scott, driving the Kubota Tractors Spectrum 011, set a time of 1:15.6602 in the second of today's two practice sessions, smashing last year's pole position time by over 0.6 seconds.
"The car felt great today, we have had some good speed all year but things haven't gone our way a lot, but today it all came together and to be up the top is awesome," Joshua Scott said today.
Having just launched his own website, www.joshscottracing.com, Scott is looking ahead to the weekend with added confidence.
"It is definitely a breakthrough for me, mentally I now know I have the speed to mix it with anyone in the field so today was a huge step for me for sure."
Sonic Motor Racing Services Tim Slade was second fastest today in his Discount Renovators Warehouse/Statewide Ice Van Diemen RF04 with a 1:15.6822 in the second practice session.
"Today went well and set us up well for the weekend, the car is going great and I'm just looking forward to getting out there and go racing," Tim Slade said.
Third fastest today was championship leader John Martin, who after being fastest in the opening practice session posted a fastest time of 1:15.7471 for the day despite not being entirely happy.
"I think there's a bit more speed in the car.I didn't get a full lap together the way I would have liked but we have the pace so now we need to get that in the qualifying and races on the weekend.
Martin, who is a CAMS Rising Star, will fly the Aussie flag in the coming months as he heads over the compete in five rounds of the British Formula Ford Championship, including the prestigious Formula Ford Festival at Brands Hatch.
"I'm a bit nervous about the whole thing but at the same time I can't wait. Borland Racing has built a car specifically for me which is great as the British championship runs with slick tyres and has about 25 more horsepower so the extra test sessions will certainly help," John Martin said today.
"We are going there to win the festival, not just compete and it looks like the two leaders in the British series at the moment will be my two biggest rivals, but I'm focussing on this round and winning the Australian Championship at the moment."
Qualifying in round three of the Australian Formula Ford Championship starts at 8.55am with race one starting at 2.30pm.
