Supercar Battle Continues At Mondello Park PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 19 July 2006
Following a titanic battle in both races of their last Mondello Park double header just two weeks ago, the Dunlop Supercars return to Mondello this Sunday for two more action packed races. While the Supercars will be the highlight of the day there is plenty of other action guaranteed with the Dunlop Abarth Cup and the sensational machinery of the Irish Formula Libre championship also on the bill.

Rod McGovern started Mondello's last event in second place in the championship behind John Whelan, who held a very comfortable looking twelve point advantage. When the dust had settled following two races full of incident McGovern was the big winner taking victory in race two and leaving the track with a fourteen point championship lead. Along with McGovern, Karl Leonard, Alan Dawson, Whelan and David O'Brien were all in contention for the race wins, with Dawson taking race one, and more of the same can be expected from the Supercars this Sunday.

The growing Formula Libre championship this weekend will contain three Formula 3000 cars, Ken Fildes Formula Atlantic and the very quick self built Mygale Turbo of Michael Roche. Alongside the single seaters the grid will boast a handful of very quick Radical Sportscars and Ron Cumming's AC3000 GT. The Leastone Formula 5 championship brings another 8 cars to the line swelling the Libre grid to over the twenty mark.

The Dunlop Abarth Cup makes makes only its second appearance of the season at Mondello Park and the entertaining little tin tops should add some extra spice to the event. Two races for the Abarth's will provide the usual action throughout the field with Derek Graham, Quentin Smith, Liam Denning, Gordon Kellett and Barry Rabbitt the main contenders. Reigning champion Graham leads the series from Smith Kellett and Rabbitt and looks like he is on his way to another title but as usual will have to fight for every point.

The remainder of the ten race programme is filled by the Porsche Open championship with two races and a single race for Historics and the combined Punto & Uno grid.
