Cambridgeshire based Formula Renault UK sensation Alexander Sims sees this
weekend’s ninth and 10th rounds of the season at Croft in North Yorkshire as his
best chance yet of stepping on to the top step of the podium for the first time
in 2008.
The 20-year-old, who lives in Wansford near Peterborough, is fourth in the
championship standings heading into the Croft weekend with three podiums to his
credit. Although he’s still very much in the title hunt, Alexander wants to hit
a better run of consistency in his Manor Competition car and aims to start the
upturn with a double podium finish at Croft.
Taking place this weekend 31st May/1st June, the fifth race meeting of the
campaign marks the halfway point of the championship – a pivotal time for each
competitor with the 11th and 12th rounds of the season following on just seven
days later at Silverstone Grand Prix Circuit as support to the British round of
the World Series by Renault.
“I’m very much looking forward to Croft, I feel it’s coming at the right
time in the season for us”, said Alexander, “It’s a circuit I enjoy driving at
and somewhere we’ve enjoyed good performances in the past. At a time when we
really need to kick-start our campaign I think Croft is a circuit where we can
go well this weekend.”
Having enjoyed great success at Croft during the 2006 Formula Renault UK
Winter Championship, where he achieved his first ever podium in cars during only
his third ever race, Alexander also claimed a solid top five finish during the
main 2007 campaign.
More recently, during official pre-season testing at the North Yorkshire
track in April, Alexander was fastest overall on day one and went on to produce
the quickest time in the third of the four sessions run on the second day.
“I’m confident we should be further up the order at Croft than we have been
recently, our true pace should show and I genuinely believe we’ll be in good
shape to challenge for the podium in both races”, added the Motor Sports
Association (MSA) British Race Elite member, “It’s as strong a circuit as any
for us, hopefully there will be a lot to celebrate.”
Free practice ahead of the ninth and 10th rounds of the 2008 Formula
Renault UK season will take place on Friday, 30th May, with qualifying to follow
on Saturday, 31st May, at 14.15 and 17.40.
Both races will take place on Sunday, 1st June, with round nine – which is
expected to be screened live on Freeview, digital satellite and cable channel
ITV4 – getting underway at around 13.15 and round 10 commencing at approximately
17.55.
