Will Power will race at The Milwaukee Mile for the second time in his career
when the IndyCar Series visits the historic venue for the ABC Supply Co AJ Foyt
225 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin this weekend.
This will be the only time this season that Power races on an oval where he has
previous racing experience, having driven at the one-mile speedway in a Champ
Car race for Team Australia in 2006 – the Australian’s sole oval race before
this season.
The Milwaukee Mile is the oldest continuously operating
racing venue in the world, hosting motorsport events at the Wisconsin State
Fairgrounds venue every year since 1903.
Power, driver of the Aussie
Vineyards – Team Australia Honda/Dallara/Firestone, is currently eighth in the
2008 IndyCar Series standings after five races and leads the Bombardier Rookie
of the Year standings.
Power, born in Toowoomba in Queensland, scored
his best oval result of the season last weekend in his Indianapolis 500 debut,
coming home in 13th place.
Coincidentally, Power’s best oval result
remains his first oval race at Milwaukee back in 2006 in the Aussie Vineyards -
Team Australia Champ Car, when Power qualified a sensational fifth and was
classified in 11th position.
WHAT THE TEAM HAD TO SAY …
Will Power: #8 Aussie Vineyards - Team Australia
Honda/Dallara/Firestone
“I’ve definitely been looking forward to
Milwaukee for lots of reasons,” said Power.
“It’s the only oval on the
schedule that I’ve been to before and I ran reasonably well there in the Champ
Car.
“My aim is that the Aussie Vineyards car will be a bit more
competitive at Milwaukee than the other ovals.
“Because Milwaukee is
quite a flat oval, you run a lot of downforce and the set-up almost resembles a
road course package. So our team will not be quite as far behind the top teams
with all their oval experience as would usually be the case.
“We hung on
there in the end to get a solid result at Indy despite a problem with the right
rear wheel towards the end. This year is going to be tough on the ovals but our
goal is to be continually improving so that we keep getting closer and closer to
having a consistently fast package.”
Craig Gore: Aussie Vineyards -
Team Australia
“It’s an advantage that Will has been to Milwaukee
before and he performed well on that occasion in the Team Australia Champ Car,”
said Gore.
“This is a very busy time of the season for the Aussie
Vineyards crew. Will and the team will be challenged by many different tracks
over the next few months.
“Will is coming to grips with oval racing
quite nicely and the month of May has given him new confidence. I’m confident
that he will continue to improve in Milwaukee.”
