Ards Borough Council are supporting the development of a major new race meeting in their area this summer. The Martin Donnelly Trophy, which will be held at the Kirkistown Race Track on the 26th. August 2006, is named after the former Grand Prix driver who started his racing career at the County Down circuit.
Martin and his family will be there in person to present the trophy in memory of his late father Martin Donnelly Senior, and the event will attract competitors and spectators from the UK and the Republic of Ireland as it is the Irish Festival for the popular and spectacular FF1600 racing cars. The FF1600 Festival will be run on a knock out basis with at least two heats and a final during the day.
“We are happy to support this intuitive as we feel it will bring
considerable benefits to our area. The organisers have a three-year
plan to develop this meeting into a very major event, and the
television package that they have organised for the 2006 race is very
impressive.
The Ards backed races, in addition to being shown on the UTV and RTE
channels, will also be seen in thirty countries across Europe and
beyond through the programmes distribution by the French based company
Motors TV.” Said Clr. Angus Carson the Mayor of Ards at the
announcement of their association with the event on the 17th. July 2006.
