Team Australia driver Will Power has secured his best starting position on an
oval by posting the fourth fastest time during qualifying for the ABC Supply
Co/A.J. Foyt Indy 225 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin today.
The Queenslander was the final driver to take to the Milwaukee Mile during
qualifying where he posted a four lap average of 167.265 mp/h (269.19 km/h)
aboard the #8 Aussie Vineyards - Team Australia Honda/Dallara/Firestone. This
qualifying performance will ensure he starts from the outside of the second row
for tomorrow’s 225-lap race.
This weekend’s event is the second time
Power has competed at the famed one-mile oval. When the 27-year-old made his
debut back in 2006 at the venue he qualified fifth before being classified 11th
in the race.
Power showed some impressive speed aboard the #8 Aussie
Vineyards - Team Australia Honda/Dallara/Firestone throughout the lead up
sessions. In morning practice he recorded the second fastest lap and was the
fourth fastest driver in the second practice session.
Third-generation
racer Marco Andretti became the youngest pole winner in IndyCar Series history
when he claimed the PEAK Motor Oil Pole Award today. The 21-year-old will be
joined on the front row by 19-year-old Graham Rahal.
Power enters this
weekend eighth in the championship standings with 114 points and leads the
Bombardier Learjet Rookie of the Year race by 16 points.
The 225-lap ABC
Supply Co/A.J. Foyt Indy 225 will fire into action at 4:00pm US Eastern Time
(6:00am AEST).
WHAT THE TEAM HAD TO SAY……
Will Power -
#8 Aussie Vineyards - Team Australia Honda/Dallara/Firestone
"The
team and I are really happy with my qualifying position," said Power.
"We ran upfront yesterday and in both practices today, and the car has
been running well around here, so we were confident coming into qualifying. I am
really happy for Aussie Vineyards - Team Australia, and I really like this race
track.
“You can run behind people and pass them, which is fun. I think
there will be great racing tomorrow."
Craig Gore - Aussie Vineyards -
Team Australia
“Today’s result in qualifying is a great follow up from
last weekend's efforts at the Indy 500,” said Gore.
“Every time Will
takes to an oval in the Aussie Vineyards car he is continuing to improve,
hopefully the team can transfer this speed into a good result in tomorrow’s
race.
“Milwaukee is one of the most famous tracks in the series and to
achieve a good result here would be a big boost for the team.”
