FORMULA RENAULT WINTER SERIES REACHES CAPACITY
Entry for the 2006 Formula Renault UK Winter Championship with Michelin has now closed after the grid capacity of 28 was reached on Wednesday, 25th October. Rounds one and two will be at Brands Hatch on Sunday, 5th November with the final rounds at Croft on Saturday, 11th November.
Fortec Motorsport added its fourth entry in the form of 2005 Graduate Cup Champion Richard Keen (Amersham, Bucks). The 20-year-old started the 2006 Formula Renault UK season with Position 1 Racing before switching to race a Formula Renault 3.5 car in the World Series by Renault event at Donington Park in front of more than 100,000 people.
Highly competitive racing is expected between Jon Lancaster (Calverley, Leeds), Adam Christodoulou (Lichfield, Staffs), Riki Christodoulou (Sutton Coldfield) and Alexander Sims (Peterborough) as they bid to be the highest ranked karting graduate. Meanwhile, two champions from other formulae make their Formula Renault UK debuts. Niall Breen (Dundalk, Co Louth) is the reigning Formula BMW UK Champion and Carl Skerlong (Northampton) is the 2006 American Formula TR Pro Series 2000 Champion.
Hillspeed confirmed its entry with Neb Bursac (Hathersage, Derbyshire) who becomes the first Serbian to race in Formula Renault UK. Russell Racing’s Ben Mason (Maud, Aberdeenshire) will step up to Formula Renault UK after a two-race outing in Formula Renault BARC earlier in the year, while German-based SL Formula Racing has a three-car team of Pierre Selander, Michael Rossi and Anton Nebylitskiy. These three drivers will race in International Class, a non-points scoring category for non-MSA licence holders.
The final place on the grid was taken by Ryan Borthwick (Hawick, Scotland) who will race for his independent team Borthwick Motorsport. The 16-year-old had three races in the 2006 Formula Renault BARC Championship with a best result of eighth, before joining Formula Renault UK for the final two rounds at Silverstone.
Keen joins former Position 1 Racing team-mate Armaan Ebrahim (Woking) and Manor Motorsport’s Franck Mailleux (Hull) as the drivers with most Formula Renault UK experience. Ronnie Theiler (Faversham), Kris Loane (Kesh, Co Fermanagh), 2006 Formula Renault BARC Champion Richard Singleton (Conway, Wales), Jordan Oakes (Hopton, Norfolk), Emma Selway (Tring, Herts) and Hywel Lloyd (Corwen, Denbighshire) have all driven the Formula Renault 2.0 car in Formula Renault UK specification, while Ben Mason and Dean Stoneman (Southampton) both have experience of the car in Formula Renault BARC specification.
The remaining competitors are Formula Renault UK debutants. Brazilian pair Claudio Cantelli Jnr and Adriano Buzaid (Oxford) and joined by Austrian Martin Ragginger, Japanese Sho Hanawa, Briton Richard Kent (Clifton Reynes, Bucks) and American racer Jeremy Braun (Washington, USA). Braun intends to race in the International Class.
