FPR perfectly poised for championship lead PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 08 June 2008
Mark Winterbottom is just six points off the V8 Supercar Championship Series lead after his staunch good form continued in today’s racing at Sandown International After qualifying second this morning Frosty kept race winner Jamie Whincup honest for the entire 39 laps finishing just two seconds behind. The two front runners were possibly the only drivers to enjoy an incident-free race, however, and Steve Richards’ drama started right from lap one. From seventh on the grid, Richo found himself locked between two cars with nowhere to go. The result was a spin for both him and Todd Kelly, sending the #6 Castrol FPR Falcon into the pits for a mechanical black flag and down to 29th on track.  Over race distance, Richo clawed his way back to 23rd but has it all to do in tomorrow’s remaining races, which start at 12.15pm. Mark Winterbottom#5 Orrcon Ford Credit FPR Falcon “It’s all going well! There were a few interesting moments during the race, like when Marcus Marshall had an off and water was on the track. There were moments like that where I thought I was on Jamie [Whincup] but I’m not going to go all out for glory; there’s no point. We’re only a few points off the lead now and I’d rather bag a second than a DNF. “The car wasn’t very good early on but once it settled down we were on the times so if we get that right tomorrow it should be a good race.”  Steve Richards#6 Castrol FPR Falcon “I haven’t seen the footage, but whoever was behind causing the drama was to blame [for the lap one incident]. I was steering through the corner crashing into the car in front because the guy behind was banging into my bumper. I don’t think it was just Will Davison. It was coming from about three cars back. After that I was just making up the numbers.” Tim EdwardsTeam Principal “It was a bitter sweet result today; fantastic for Mark and fantastic pace from Steve, just unfortunate that he got turned around on the first lap. The positive thing is that both cars have good race pace; Steve will just have to pull off one of his masterful drives tomorrow to get back into contention.” Sandown 400 - 2008 V8 Supercar Championship SeriesRound 5: Qualifying
