Snetterton Circuit in Norfolk provided the venue for the second podium finish of Jeremy Metcalfe’s maiden Avon Tyres British GT Championship campaign yesterday, Saturday, 7th June – the Hampshire racer now joint-third in the 2008 driver standings as a result
Mastering very difficult wet conditions which were a feature of qualifying and the first of the weekend’s races, the 20-year-old from Fleet produced a terrific performance at the wheel of his CR Scuderia Ferrari 430 during the opening stint of the one-hour encounter to run in a highly competitive second position up to the driver-change pit-stop on lap 17.
Team-mate Luke Hines did go on to take the lead of the race a couple of laps later when the order sorted itself out following the round of pit-stops. Although passed by the championship leading Trimite Brookspeed Dodge Viper and Matech GT Racing Ford GT during the closing stages, third place was a welcome result for the duo.
“I got a good start and the car did everything I wanted”, said Jeremy, “I drove my best, Luke drove his best and I think third was the best we could have realistically hoped for. The team has done a great job, it’s great to get another podium and more points for the championship.”
Qualifying the fastest of the regular British GT runners, Jeremy was very quick on the wet track and set a best time of 1m 19.540 seconds (88.34mph) to secure a place on the front row for round seven – second only to the powerful Ford GT which is making its first, and only, appearance in the British series this weekend.
Taking into account the six points scored for third position during yesterday’s race, Jeremy is now equal third in the driver standings on 26 points along with team-mate Hines and fellow CRS racers Michael Cullen and Paddy Shovlin.
Looking ahead to round eight this afternoon, Sunday, 8th June, the duo will start on the fourth row of the grid after Hines posted a best time during the second qualifying session of 1m 19.700 seconds (88.16mph). Today’s race will take place at 14.00.
Television highlights of the fifth and sixth rounds of the season, which took place at Rockingham, will be screened on digital satellite and cable channel Motors TV today at 13.00 and then again at 22.00. Further re-runs will be shown throughout the next fortnight with additional coverage on Channel 4 on Wednesday, 11th June, at 02.40.
