Brisbane teenager Nick Foster showed some promising signs during the round three of the Genuine Ford Parts Australian Formula Ford Championship at Melbourne’s Sandown International Raceway this weekend.
Foster, who debuted in the championship at Eastern Creek earlier this year, continually improved across the weekend before finishing today’s final race just outside the top ten in the largest field of Formula Ford’s assembled in over three years.
After qualifying 18th fastest the 16-year-old student made up a couple of positions during the shortened race one before climbing further up the order in the opening few laps of race two.
Unfortunately, a mid-race incident with Martin Short – who went on to finish 11th – forced Foster off the circuit at Dandenong corner damaging the wheel bearing on the #13 Steeline Metal Framing Systems Van Diemen which ended the youngster’s charge.
Determined to fight back in the final 12-lap race Foster showed some impressive speed from the outset to claw his way up ten positions and cross the line in 12th position.
Sydney driver Paul Laskazeski won the round ahead of Scott Pye and Adam Graham. The next round of the championship will be contested at Darwin’s Hidden Valley Raceway on July 4-6.
WHAT HE HAD TO SAY…..
“Overall I’m pretty pleased with the progress I made across the weekend, my times continually improved and in the final race I was over half a second faster than I posted during qualifying on new tyres,” said Foster.
“It was disappointing to have the incident in race two because if it wasn’t for that I believe a top ten result would have been achievable.
“In the wet race I felt as I drove well and was able to mix it with guys who have got a lot more experience than what I’ve got in these cars.
“I’m really looking forward to getting to Hidden Valley as it is a track the Formula Ford championship hasn’t been to before so everyone is on a level playing field to start with.”
