New benchmark time set at Melbourne leg of the Irwin Industrial Tools Ultimate Tradesman Challenge PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 12 June 2008
Sam Garretto of Taylors Lakes has set an outstanding time in winning the Victorian leg of the Irwin Industrial Tools Ultimate Tradesman Challenge

The 45-year-old joiner/builder beat over 200 other competitors held at the Sandown leg of the V8 Supercar Championship Series, with a time of 18.40 seconds, some three seconds quicker than the previous best in the entire competition.

Garretto joins winners from South Australia, Western Australia and New Zealand at the Australia/New Zealand Final at the Bathurst 1000 in October.

Garretto won $1000 of IRWIN Tools and a trip to Bathurst to compete in the ANZ Final and the chance to go on to win $US1.26 million.

The Irwin Industrial Tools Ultimate Tradesman Challenge, which launched in February at the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide, requires competitors to measure, mark and drill a piece of wood, using IRWIN tools as quickly and accurately as possible.

Garretto first saw the Ultimate Tradesman Challenge at the Clipsal 500.

“I’m wrapped to have won at Sandown and can’t wait for Bathurst,” said Garretto

“I actually set a very quick time at the Irwin Industrial Tools Ultimate Tradesman Challenge in Adelaide, but just missed out. I was very keen to do the job at Sandown and was delighted with the time I set.

“I understand the winning time at the world final last year was around 20-seconds. Even though I did a time in the mid 18-second bracket to win at Sandown, I’m not getting ahead of myself, just looking forward to Bathurst and being prepared for that.

“IRWIN has excellent products and I have used them for a long time. As a joiner and builder I know the importance of good quality equipment and using IRWIN in business has always been good to me. Here’s hoping it brings an even bigger smile to my face later in the year!”

Garretto joins West Australian carpenter Nathan Vander Wielen, Victorian plumber Shaun Puddy who won the South Australian leg at the Clipsal 500 and Auckland builder Damian Max, the winner of the Hamilton 400 Ultimate Tradesman Challenge.

The champion of the Australia and New Zealand’s Ultimate Tradesman Challenge will win a trip to the USA. There they will compete in the IRWIN International Ultimate Tradesman Challenge on November 9, in Phoenix where they have the chance to become a millionaire.

The next qualifying round for the IRWIN Industrial Tools Ultimate Tradesman Challenge will be held at the Queensland 400, the seventh round of the V8 Supercar Championship Series, on 18-20 July.
