Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit – Round 1 Australian Manufacturers
Championship
Wilson Brothers Racing has started the first round
of the 2008 Australian Manufacturers Championship off strongly, with both of
their Subaru WRX Stis placed within the top four.
Lee Castle, in only his fourth circuit race meeting
and first at Phillip Island, topped the time sheets in the second practice
session, and followed up with a second quickest in practice three.
Brian Smallwood in the second Wilson Brothers
Racing entry improved markedly throughout the day to finish a strong fourth for
the day in the final session.
The day was a tough one for all competitors, with
regular rain squalls ripping over the Phillip Island circuit, giving crews
plenty to think about between sessions.
Team principal Cameron Wilson was pleased with the
progress of the team on the opening day of the championship.
“To have Lee post the quickest time in the second
session was a real confidence boost for the team, as it was Lee’s first time on
this very difficult circuit in very tricky conditions,” said
Wilson.
“Brian meanwhile has really knuckled down as the
day has progressed, and looking at the data from his car, he should be right on
the pace come qualifying tomorrow.”
A fourth practice session will be followed by
qualifying tomorrow, with the opening one hour race with a compulsory pit stop
with two tyre changes to be held at 4pm.
