Hyundai wins manufacturers championship opener PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 16 June 2008

The revamped Australian Manufacturers Championship for Production Cars kicked off at Phillip Island this weekend as part of Round Four of the Shannons Nationals, with Hyundai emerging successful.

A promising 16-car field including nine manufacturers headed to the Victorian circuit, following a major overhaul of the Production Car scene in recent months.

Drivers scored points in a class-based structure, with manufacturers also scoring points based on the results of nominated drivers.

Hyundai took first blood, with Class D driver George Miedecke grabbing the outright win in Race One aboard his factory-entered Tiburon and Sonata driver Jamie Augustine topping Class E.

Miedecke backed it up with second in class in Race Two, while Augustine again won Class E to give the Korean manufacturer the opening round honours ahead of Toyota.

"It's been a fantastic weekend," Miedecke said.

"Hyundai have been incredibly enthusiastic in their support of our program, to repay that with a race win and help them win the opening round is a great result.

"The Tiburon is a strong package, so we're looking forward to the rest of the year."

Miedecke also shares the outright driver's championship lead with Class D rival Colin Osborne (Toyota Celica), who was second in class in Race One before edging out Miedecke in Race Two.

Des Wall won Race Two in his Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX as part of a perfect weekend in Class A, with Garry Holt (BMW 353i) and Jake Camilleri (Mazda 3 MPS) topping Classes B and C respectively in each race.

In Round Five of the Kumho Tyres Australian Formula 3 Championship, Nathan Caratti extended his championship lead from four points to 18.

Caratti, who took the lead at Mallala last month, won the opening race after a late pass on Leanne Tander and finished second in a controversial Race Two.

"After getting the championship lead at Mallala, we were determined to follow it up with a good result here," Caratti said.

"Qualifying was a bit of a disaster for us with the changeable weather, and we were pretty disappointed afterwards.

"Today was a lot better, in Race One we had heaps of straightline speed and were able to slipstream and pass Leanne and get the win, before getting second in Race Two."

British driver Winslow bounced back from a Race One incident to win the second race, in which Tander and Stuart Kostera were penalised for overlapping at a restart and finished down the order.

Mat Sofi was third and Neil McFadyen fourth in provisional results.

Melbourne driver Darren Hossack took his Audi to two out of three Kerrick Sports Sedan race wins and the round win, a jump-start in Race Two the only blot on his copybook.

Hossack recovered to finish fourth in the race, with Tony Ricciardello and points leader Luke Youlden second and third for the weekend.

2006 champion Marcus Zukanovic made a successful one-off return to the Menzel Glass Commodore Cup Series, winning two races and the round, with Nick Parker also grabbing a race victory en-route to second for the weekend.

After finishing fourth for the weekend, Adam Lloyd now leads the series.

New South Welshman Benjamin Porter took out the opening round of the SAF Holland Formula Vee Series, leading home Victorian driver Daniel Reinhardt.

John Wise and Spud Wood split the Muscle Car Gearboxes HQ National Series race wins, with Wood taking the Round Three honours.

Telecasts of the Phillip Island action will start on Sunday 20 July on Speedweek, SBS, check local guides for times.

The next round of the 2008 Shannons Nationals will be held at Sydney's Eastern Creek Raceway on 12-13 July.
