The distinctive sight and sound of the Britek Motorsport Ford Fiesta Super 2000
will return to the forests outside the Sunshine Coast on June 20-22 for the 40th
running of the Coates Rally Queensland, round three of the Australian Rally
Championship.
Darren Windus and co-driver John Mortimer will step aboard the Britek Motorsport
designed and developed Fiesta, the only Super 2000 Ford in competition anywhere
in the world.
The Japanese Wholesale Spares team of Windus and Mortimer
were part of Britek’s 2007 Australian Rally Championship campaign aboard the
S2000 Fiesta.
The West Australian duo are third in the 2008 title chase
and believe the Britek S2000 Fiesta provides them with their best chance of
closing the gap to the powerful Toyota S2000 duo of Neal Bates and Simon Evans.
“John and I are delighted to get back aboard what we consider the most
exciting rally car we have ever driven,” said Windus.
“We have had an
excellent start to the 2008 season and many people would have thought it best to
stick with the Subaru WRX. However, to catch those Toyotas we need to be in the
same type of machinery.
“The experience from driving the Fiesta last
year and the extraordinary effort put into its design and development by the
Britek Motorsport group made the choice pretty simple.
“Britek
Motorsport Managing Director Jason Bright has been very supportive in working
with us to put together a program for the remainder of 2008. Not only will we
have the car at our disposal, but also some of the very best back-up as well.
“As for the Coates Rally Queensland – we have picked an excellent event
to bring the Fiesta back. Very technical stages and with the recent wet weather
in that region, the roads will be nice and hard, so having a good handling car
will be all-important. That’s exactly what we have with the Fiesta.”
Leading the Britek program is Motorsport Manager Marcus Clarke and Head
Rally Technician Stephen White.
“We are really looking forward to
getting the S2000 Fiesta back on the gravel in Queensland,” said Clarke.
“We have totally re-built the Fiesta, plus added some new ideas aimed at
improving the car speed and reliability.
“The Britek Fiesta showed
enormous potential by the end of last season. Darren was very much part of the
reason for that progression and we feel that can continue at the Coates Rally
Queensland.
“Britek as a rally team might not have been in competition
since November, but Darren certainly has at both national and state level. He’s
driving extremely well and I’m sure he can easily translate that back into the
S2000 Fiesta.”
The Coates Rally Queensland has attracted 38 entries to
tackle 18 timed stages totalling 247 competitive kilometres, including the
popular Pacific Ford Shootout on Friday night at the Nambour Showground.
The Japanese Wholesale Spares Ford Fiesta will feature an all-new paint
scheme for the Coates Rally Queensland including support from Groundforce Hire,
Michelin, Hog’s Breath Cafe and Melbourne Performance Centre.
