Power to start 11th in Iowa as rain cancels qualifying PDF Print E-mail

Will Power will start the Iowa Corn Indy 250 from 11th place after rain cancelled qualifying at Iowa Speedway in Newton, Iowa today. The starting order has been set by championship points standings, giving Power a solid starting position for tomorrow’s race by virtue of being 11th in the 2008 IndyCar Series standings. Power worked on race set-up around the 0.875-mile oval in the two practices sessions earlier in the day, putting the #8 Aussie Vineyards – Team Australia car 18th fastest in first practice and 15th fastest in final practice.

Yesterday, drivers and teams were given a test session on the short Iowa oval, with Power finishing that test with the 10th fastest time.

Series leader Scott Dixon will start from pole for tomorrow’s Iowa Corn Indy 250 ahead of Helio Castroneves, Dan Wheldon, Tony Kanaan and Ryan Briscoe.

Will Power: #8 Aussie Vineyards - Team Australia Honda/Dallara/Firestone

“Starting 11th is not a bad result for Aussie Vineyards – Team Australia,” said Power.

“In practice we could see it is going to be pretty tough to pass, so in the race tomorrow we are going to need a good race strategy and we will have to make the right decisions at the right time during the yellows.

“The race will be all about good pit stops and track position.”

“Iowa is a challenging track and strategy will be crucial as it is can be very hard to pass,” said Gore.

“Will is in a solid spot in the standings, just outside the top 10, so with the rainout this gives him a good starting position.

“Will has been getting better and better in the Aussie Vineyards – Team Australia car on these ovals, so a strong result tomorrow would go a long way to getting Will back in the top 10 in the points.”
