Will Power will start the Iowa Corn Indy 250 from 11th place after rain cancelled qualifying at Iowa Speedway in Newton, Iowa today. The starting order has been set by championship points standings, giving Power a solid starting position for tomorrow’s race by virtue of being 11th in the 2008 IndyCar Series standings.
Power worked on race set-up around the 0.875-mile oval in the two practices sessions earlier in the day, putting the #8 Aussie Vineyards – Team Australia car 18th fastest in first practice and 15th fastest in final practice. Yesterday, drivers and teams were given a test session on the short Iowa oval, with Power finishing that test with the 10th fastest time. Series leader Scott Dixon will start from pole for tomorrow’s Iowa Corn Indy 250 ahead of Helio Castroneves, Dan Wheldon, Tony Kanaan and Ryan Briscoe. WHAT THE TEAM HAD TO SAY … Will Power: #8 Aussie Vineyards - Team Australia Honda/Dallara/Firestone “Starting 11th is not a bad result for Aussie Vineyards – Team Australia,” said Power. “In practice we could see it is going to be pretty tough to pass, so in the race tomorrow we are going to need a good race strategy and we will have to make the right decisions at the right time during the yellows. “The race will be all about good pit stops and track position.” Craig Gore: Aussie Vineyards - Team Australia “Iowa is a challenging track and strategy will be crucial as it is can be very hard to pass,” said Gore. “Will is in a solid spot in the standings, just outside the top 10, so with the rainout this gives him a good starting position. “Will has been getting better and better in the Aussie Vineyards – Team Australia car on these ovals, so a strong result tomorrow would go a long way to getting Will back in the top 10 in the points.” RESULTS: Practice 2 1. #6 Ryan Briscoe 17.4206 2. #27 Hideki Mutoh 17.4735 3. #11 Tony Kanaan 17.4738 4. #3 Helio Castroneves 17.4812 5. #7 Danica Patrick 17.5038 6. #10 Dan Wheldon 17.5230 7. #17 Ryan Hunter Reay 17.5759 8. #14 Darren Manning 17.5838 9. #26 Marco Andretti 17.5852 10. #20 Ed Carpenter 17.5884 15. #8 Will Power 17.6156 RESULTS: Practice 1 1. #27 Hideki Mutoh 17.4023 2. #6 Ryan Briscoe 17.4326 3. #10 Dan Wheldon 17.4371 4. #26 Marco Andretti 17.4429 5. #4 Vitor Meira 17.4577 6. #11 Tony Kanaan 17.5025 7. #7 Danica Patrick 17.5053 8. #3 Helio Castroneves 17.5141 9. #9 Scott Dixon 17.5254 10. #17 Ryan Hunter Reay 17.5768 18= E #8 Will Power 17.6673 2008 IndyCar Series Points Standings - After Race 6 1. #9 Scott Dixon 284 2. #3 Helio Castroneves 249 3. #10 Dan Wheldon 217 4. #11 Tony Kanaan 204 5. #6 Ryan Briscoe 169 6. #7 Danica Patrick 164 7. #27 Hideki Mutoh 159 8. #26 Marco Andretti 154 9. #20 Ed Carpenter 154 10. #5 Oriol Servia 150 11. #8 Will Power 147 2008 Bombardier Rookie of the Year Standings - After Race 6 1. #27 Hideki Mutoh 159 2. #8 Will Power 147 3. #33 EJ Viso 133 4. #06 Graham Rahal 127 5. #36 Enrique Bernoldi 125 6. #02 Justin Wilson 117 7. #19 Mario Moraes 89 8. #24 Jay Howard 62 9. #96 Mario Dominguez 57 10. #34 Franck Perera 56 RACE SCHEDULE Local Iowa (US Central) Times Race – Iowa Corn Indy 250 Sunday 22 June 2008 12:30pm US Central 1:30pm US Eastern UNITED STATES TV SCHEDULE Sunday 22 June 2008 ABC 1:00pm – 3:30pm US Eastern AUSTRALIAN TIMES Australian Eastern Standard Times Race – Iowa Corn Indy 250 Monday 23 June 2008 3:30am AEST AUSTRALIAN TV SCHEDULE Monday 23 June 2008 ESPN 3:30am AEST AUSTRALIAN TV REPLAY Monday 23 Ju! ne 2008 ESPN 7:30pm AEST ABOUT IOWA SPEEDWAY Iowa Corn Indy 250 Venue: Iowa Speedway Location: Newton, Iowa Type: 0.875 mile oval – 12 degree banking Distance: 250 laps – 218.75 miles/352.04km INDYCAR SERIES RECORD BOOK Defending Race Winner: Dario Franchitti Defending Polesitter: Scott Dixon Will Power: Iowa Speedway debut VIDEO NEWS FEED INFORMATION FOR NEWS BROADCASTERS The IndyCar Series will provide Video News Feeds this week featuring material from the IndyCar® Series and Firestone Indy Lights™.
