2006 Queensland Motor Racing Championships August 26/27, Morgan Park Raceway Warwick
The oldest continually running one make class in the country, the Queensland Gemini Series, has hit back in 2006, with capacity fields bringing back memories of the glory days.
The resurgence will continue at Morgan Park Raceway on August 26/27, with a full field of cars expected to take to the track.
Before the Queensland Motor Racing Championships, the Gemini Series takes a detour south to Victoria, with a strong field of cars taking to Winton Motor Raceway for a series of demonstration races.
In for a busy couple of months is Cameron Wilson, whose Wilson Brothers Racing crew help prepare no less than eight Gemini racers, and Wilson is pumped up about the future prospects for the class.
“It is amazing, what is essentially a 30-year-old car, and the pace we
are getting out of them these days for a standard 1600cc is quite
amazing,” said Wilson.
“The Geminis make a good race car, they've got a good balance, they're
a good weight for the horsepower they have, which provides us with such
good close racing.
“With the new control tyre coming on board this year from Yokohama,
we've had to do a bit with the suspension set ups of the cars to get
the cars on the pace.
“The Geminis are the only controlled class in Australia which has free
suspension settings, so you can run any shocks and springs you want,
and it's a good thing for people getting into the sport to get a grip
with setting cars up.
“Needless to say the cars are very quick. Apart from the open wheelers,
the Geminis would have faster cornering speeds onto and off the
straight than any other championship class.”
But it isn't just fun for the boys, with a group of determined females taking it up to the boys.
Brisbane racer Aleisha Boughen is in her first year of competition, and enjoying every moment of it.
“It's great fun, I love it, It's good competitive racing,” said Boughen.
“I like how everything is so tight, everyone is pretty even, you've
always got someone to battle with, it's just good fun all round.”
The Geminis form a small part of the 10 classes that will take to the
track for the Queensland Motor Championships, with all classes taking
to the track five times over the weekend.
Entry forms are available on QRDA website, www.qrda.asn.au, with discount incentives of up to $35 available for early entry and for QRDA members.
