Formed in 2006 as a partnership between the Confederation of Australian Motorsport, circuit promoters and racing categories, the Shannons Nationals has grown steadily and cemented its place as a viable home for national-level racing categories.

In 2008, the series consists of 10 rounds, visiting seven different circuits in four states, with 15 different categories featuring on the card over the course of the year.

"The Shannons Nationals has always been built with long-term goals in mind," Series Director Rob Curkpatrick said.

"We're two-and-a-half years in and pleased with how things are going, from a business point of view it's sound and sustainable, and awareness of the series itself is growing.

"On the track, the overall product is getting better and better and individual categories are benefiting from the stability of the program, all of which points to a positive future."

Eastern Creek's event on 12-13 July will include seven categories; Kumho Tyres Australian Formula 3 Championship, Australian GT Championship, Kerrick Sports Sedan National Series, Commodore Cup, Saloon Cars, Shannons V8 Touring Car Series and Superkarts.

Eligibility for the new Shannons V8 Touring Car Series has been expanded ahead of its second round, with two new classes set to put more V8s on track.

V8 Touring Cars Group 2 has been established to accommodate pre-V8 Supercar era Group 3A Ford Falcons and Holden Commodores, which raced in the Australian Touring Car Championship between 1993 and 1996.

By invitation, other suitable Ford and Holden V8 touring cars can also be log booked to run in a separate Sport Sedans class under a grid sharing arrangement.

"This expanded eligibility will create a place to race for many more V8 Ford and Holden touring cars," Curkpatrick explained.

"It will help fill the gap for the 1993 to 1996 Australian Touring Car Championship cars which aren't yet eligible for historic competition, with a number of significant cars out there sitting in sheds.

"The Sports Sedan class has been created primarily for cars built to Future Tourer regulations with these cars now eligible to run in the series until the end of 2009."

Shannons Nationals organisers have also confirmed the opening round of the 2009 season will take place at Bathurst's Mount Panorama on 20-22 February.

The Shannons Nationals will provide five support categories for the WPS Bathurst 12 Hour.

Returning to the heyday of Porsche Cup races at Bathurst, the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge and Porsche 944 competitors will share a grid, while Saloon Cars, the HQ National Series, Formula Vee and Improved Production will also tackle the famed 6.213km circuit.

"It's a good partnership with the 12 Hour and the categories are really excited about going to Bathurst," Curkpatrick said.

"All five categories will go to Bathurst with strong grids for what's set to be a great start to the 2009 Shannons Nationals."

With seven categories, Round Five of this year's Shannons Nationals at Eastern Creek on 12-13 July will feature a jam-packed weekend of motorsport, with practice, qualifying and three races on Saturday ahead of 18 races on Sunday.

In a great-value day of entertainment, Sunday tickets are just $20 including grandstand seating and pit access, with kids 12 and under free.
