Charitable encounter to mark Indy 100 day countdown PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 11 July 2008
Monday July the 14th will mark the beginning of the 100 day countdown to this year’s Gold Coast Indy 300, and organisers cannot think of a better way to celebrate than by announcing its new-for-2008 charity – Kids Under Cover.

Kids Under Cover raises funds to provide secure housing and access to education for at-risk and homeless young people, and will launch its expansion into Queensland in the coming weeks on the back of a successful track history in Victoria.

Queensland and the Gold Coast in particular has the fastest growing rate of homelessness in the nation, with a large proportion represented by those 18 years or younger.

Media are invited to attend a visit to the next site of a Queensland ‘Bungalow’ – to be built for Gold Coast teenagers, 14 year old Faith and 17 year old Ruca, who will have their Bungalow installed at the home of their Aunt and Uncle.

The father of Faith and Ruca passed away in 2002, and they are now unable to reside with their mother due to unfortunate circumstances. Their Aunt and Uncle have now taken them in, however without Kids Under Cover providing a Bungalow they would not be able to care for the brother and sister, as they simply do not have the room in the main house with a handful of little ones of their own.

V8 Supercar drivers James Courtney and Shane van Gisbergen of Stone Brothers Racing and Gold Coast Indy 300 Operations Manager David Bennett, along with Kids Under Cover Queensland State Manager Kerry Gorman will be in attendance as the kids show the site and plans for their new Bungalow which will be installed in the coming month.

Faith and Ruca, recipients of the next Gold Coast Kids Under Cover Bungalow project, will show attendees the site and plans for their new home and speak on what Kids Under Cover means to them (it would be appreciated if questions relating to the circumstances leading up to their situation be referred to Kerry Gorman due to its sensitive nature). Representatives from the Gold Coast Indy 300 and Kids Under Cover will also be available for comment.

About Kids Under Cover:
Kids Under Cover believes every young person has the right to a safe and secure home and a sound education. They raise the funds necessary to build bungalows and to provide scholarships for at risk young people and will join Surf Life Saving Queensland as an official charity of the Gold Coast Indy 300.

Kids Under Cover’s primary program provides ‘bungalows’ to assist those who are at risk of becoming homeless. KUC believes in keeping families and loved ones together but circumstances can often lead to families and support networks breaking down.

The young people that Kids Under Cover assists may have a disability or are currently in government care, foster care, or the care of other family members. Others are at risk of homelessness due to crowded and intolerable living conditions within the family home. Kids Under Cover accommodate children and young people from 0 – 24yo but the most common age bracket is 15 – 18 years.

Kids Under Cover also offers education scholarships to assist children who are bungalow recipients gain qualifications which will help them gain meaningful employment.
