Cameron McConville warns Holden V8 upset on the cards PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 13 July 2006
Supercheap Auto Racing driver Cameron McConville has warned that an upset Holden victory could be on the cards at next weekend’s sixth round of the V8 Supercar Championship at Queensland Raceway.

McConville says the results could go against expectations of a ‘home town’ victory for one of the many Queensland-based Ford teams and unexpectedly fall to a Holden team, pointing to Craig Lowndes’ victory at Winton last month as evidence.

“There’s no doubt about it, an upset win for Holden is possible, even though Queensland Raceway is the test track for so most of the Ford teams,” McConville said.

“The problem with testing at one particular circuit, as the rules dictate, is that you become so set in your ways. Track conditions change a lot and when they do there’s a danger that you’ll miss it.

“You only have to look to Winton; all the Victorian-based Holden teams tested there the week prior, and most of them set some fast times, but when it came to the race the conditions were totally different and not many were on the pace – it bit us on the backside.

“So a Holden win in Queensland is a real possibility; either Garth Tander or Rick Kelly could do it for the Toll HSV Dealer Team, [Mark] Skaife’s back in form for HRT and Steven Richards’ Jack Daniel’s Commodore has been fast at every circuit we’ve visited this year.”
While predicting an upset, McConville believes the Brisbane-based Triple 8 and Stone Brothers Ford teams remain firm favourites.

“Lowndes and his Triple 8 team are running strong at the moment, while the Stones are always dangerous, but they’ll have to perform to their best to get the win,” McConville said.
But what of McConville’s own Supercheap Auto Racing team?

“We’re coming off our best result of the year in Darwin where we finished ninth for the round, but we’ve still got a little way to go,” McConville said.

“It might be a bit too ambitious to expect a win just yet, but the work our team has put in this year has even amazed me so it won’t be for a lack of trying.”
