Supercheap Auto Racing V8 Supercar star Greg Murphy has offered a suggestion for better racing in the V8 Series following yesterday’s announcement of an ending to the controversial reverse grid races introduced at the beginning of this season.
Murphy, a four-time winner of the annual Bathurst 1000 classic for Holden, believes a racing tyre offering more grip to competitors over a longer duration than the tyre currently in use in the series would produce the much desired greater spectacle for fans.
“Who knows, all the other drivers might disagree, but if anyone is
looking for ideas one I’d suggest is to look at a different tyre
compound,” Murphy said.
“The way I see it is that the problem we have with the current tyre is
that with the cars being so heavy when the grip goes away you are
concentrating more about staying on the track rather than racing hard.
“It becomes a survival drive and then the racing tends to become somewhat processional.”
Murphy said a better tyre, which he believed V8 series control tyre
supplier Dunlop would already have in its range and be able to supply,
would take away the reliance drivers have on engineers to deliver them
a perfect race car.
“It shouldn’t be about engineers fine tuning the cars to the absolute
nth degree, it should be about tyres having enough grip late in a race
so you can actually attack the car in front of you and have a go at
passing it.
“A ‘better’ tyre would put the racing back into the hands of the
drivers and that’d make it more exciting for everyone – fans and
drivers alike.”
Murphy said the option of being able to select from two different types of tyres for a race weekend could also be an option.
“A choice of different compounds might throw something else into the
mix and if it spiced things up a bit then its worth looking at.”
