Graduate
Cup drivers James Calado (Cropthorne) and Dean Stoneman (Southampton) once again
showed their more experienced counterparts the way by clinching pole position
for the latest rounds of the 2008 Formula Renault UK with Michelin
Championship. Rounds 15 and 16 take place at Oulton Park Island circuit on
Sunday, 27th July.
Fortec
Motorsport’s Calado set a mark of 1min 18.824s (101.66mph) to claim pole for
round 15 having started round 13 at Snetterton at the head of the field.
Championship leader Adam Christodoulou (Lichfield) of CR Scuderia Formula
Renault was second, just 0.048s behind. In an incredibly close session that saw
the top 10 covered by just 0.409s, Manor Competition’s Alexander Sims
(Peterborough) was third but less than one-tenth of a second off the pole
time.
Alpine
Motorsport’s Stoneman lines up on row two for tomorrow’s first race, with
Fortec’s Adriano Buzaid (Oxford) and Manor’s Kris Loane (Kesh) in row three. CR
Scuderia’s Scott Jenkins (Bristol) will start on row four alongside Eurotek
Motorsport’s Jordan Oakes (Hopton), while title contender Riki Christodoulou
(Sutton Coldfield) has plenty of work to do from ninth. CR Scuderia’s Jesse
Krohn (Sunningdale) completes the top 10.
The
afternoon session was equally close in the battle for pole, this time Stoneman
edging out Adam Christodoulou by 0.042s with a best lap of 1min 18.939s
(101.51mph) around the undulating 2.23-mile Cheshire circuit. Sims took third
place again, although this time 0.225s away from pole, while Oakes improved to
fourth.
Fortec
team-mates Calado and Riki Christodoulou make up row three ahead of Buzaid and
Manor’s Henry Surtees (Lingfield), who climbed from 11th in session
one to eighth. CR Scuderia duo Krohn and Jenkins round out the top 10 for the
second of two 15-lap races.
Commenting
on his pole performance, James Calado said: “It feels great to get my second
pole and hopefully I can have the same result as at Snetterton and win the race.
I won’t be as nervous on the start line having experienced it once and I’ll be
trying my hardest to get a win for the team.”
Round 16
pole-sitter Stoneman said: “I didn’t make any changes to the car and my time was
identical to session one. This time it was enough to get pole and starting
fourth in the first race tomorrow, my target is definitely two podiums at
least.”
Round 15 is
scheduled for 12.00 on Sunday, 27th July with round 16 following at
16.50.
