Leader Extends Winning Form To Four PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 09 July 2006
Continuing from his unbeaten round four form, Marcus Zukanovic won the first race (of three) at the fifth round of the Ebanc Trade Commodore Cup at Eastern Creek yesterday.

The victory was not without drama though. Zukanovic led from the start but the race had to be stopped when Dennis Pana’s Holden Commodore VS blew its engine at the end of the main straight and deposited many pieces of it, plus a full complement of oil, on the track.

The new race was reduced from the scheduled eight to six laps with Zukanovic and front row partner Daniel Richert not so swift off the line. They were joined by Christan D’Agostin and Stephen White in a four-wide charge to a greasy and cement dust-covered first corner.

From position three off the line, D’Agostin emerged with the lead over Zukanovic while White and Tony Bates snuck into third and fourth, but not for long as they tangled just after the start of the second lap, both losing places.

Shortly after Zukanovic wrestled the lead off D’Agostin and held him out for the remainder of the race. Richert worked his way back up to third and just held off Holdsworth and Graham in the run to the flag. Post race Richert and Graham were penalised a minute for alleged jump starts.

That elevated Holdsworth to a podium finish ahead of David Gittus, Ashley Cooper, Bates, Nathan Collins, then the older VH’s of Ben Kavich and Allan Hill.

Earlier in the day, Zukanovic snared pole position away from Richert in the second of two qualifying sessions. It was the reverse of the previous round where the latter had pulled off a last minute top spot time. Less than two tenths of a second covered the top five.
