A Class Ahead PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 09 July 2006
Whilst race one of round four of the Shannons Australian Production Car Championship did not count for outright points, series leader David Ryan led from pole position and was never headed yesterday.

In taking the first of three races, the Ford Falcon XR6 Turbo driver enhanced his lead in Class A - particularly as nearest rival John Houlder (Falcon XR8) was penalised for allegedly jumping the start and incurred a drive through penalty.

With second fastest qualifier Steve Briffa (Holden Commodore SSZ) having to start from the rear of the grid for a technical infringement, it was up to Leigh Mertens to take up the Falcon chase. For the first this year, the Mertens Holden ran faultlessly and picked up second while Briffa fought through to third.

Nick Dunkley in the second of the XR6 Turbos, was fourth across the line, clear of the Trophy Class Honda Integra of Adam Beechey who saw off the early challenge from Colin Osborne in the Class B Toyota Celica.

Chris Delfsma’s XR8 won out in a great dice with Stewart Riach (BMW 323i) and Trevor Keene (Toyota MR2). Allan Shephard conceded his place in this rivalry with gearbox issues, yet finished ahead of the Class C protagonists David Mertens (Proton Satria) and Darren Best (Ford Focus).

When Ryan qualified top of the sheets, it came as no real surprise as the Falcon XR6 Turbo driver has been the benchmark setter for two seasons now. In his best lap of 1 min 49.3965 secs, Ryan was around seven tenths ahead of Briffa’s Commodore which was penalised when officials found a technical infringement.

Taking up the other spot on the front row was the XR8 of Houlder with the Holden/Ford combination of Leigh Mertens and Dunkley on row two.

The Trophy entry of Beechey outpointed both the Class B cars of Osborne and Shephard – the latter two had Delfsma nestled between, return to the series after a massive crash at round two.

Riach’s BMW and Keene in the MR2 headed up the Class C group where David Mertens was the fastest ahead of class leader Best and Amber Anderson debuting in the Lauren Gray Toyota Echo.
