UNFINISHED BUSINESS IN MONTREAL FOR AMBROSE PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 01 August 2008
Marcos Ambrose will be out to finish what he started when he enters the NAPA Auto Parts 200 as a hot favourite at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal, Canada this weekend.
Ambrose made headlines across the United States and Australia last year when he dominated the inaugural NACAR Nationwide Series race in Canada around the 2.71-mile road course.

Such was Ambrose’s domination in Montreal last year, he set 14 fastest laps throughout the 74-lap race.

The Australian led 37 laps, more than any other driver, and was on course for his first NASCAR victory when with two laps to go he was punted out of the lead by Robby Gordon in turn two at a restart.

Ambrose recovered from the spin to finish seventh, while Gordon was later disqualified from the race and benched for the following day’s Sprint Cup race in Pocono as a result.

Ambrose enters Montreal with a positive frame of mind, coming off the back of strong 22nd place finish in the Allstate 400 last weekend in Ambrose’s second Sprint Cup start and his first on an oval.

When it comes to road course racing Ambrose is always one to watch, with second place earlier this year in the Nationwide Series in Mexico City and running as high as second in the Sprint Cup race in Sonoma, California before transmission failure forced him out.

“It’s no secret I’m very comfortable on road courses,” said Ambrose.

“I really like the challenges of every racetrack, but racing on a road course comes natural to me. It’s second nature.

“When we go to Montreal, we go with an aggressive attitude because it’s a place where we know we can win.

“Whether it’s a road course, a speedway or a short track, this STP team believes it can contend for a win each week.

“Obviously when we’re on a road course, however, we feel like we have a little extra advantage.

“I want to be known as a complete driver. That takes time. I guess I built a reputation as a road course specialist over several years in Australia, so I may never shake that label.

“There’s so much history with STP in this sport. It’s an incredible opportunity to be part of that legacy. Hopefully we can get STP back into Victory Lane. That would continue another long tradition.”

Gary Cogswell – Crew Chief, #59 STP Ford Fusion

“Marcos not only brings a lot of talent for road courses, he brings a lot of insight on the car,” said Cogswell.

“He knows what it takes to be comfortable in the car. Having back-to-back road courses comes at a great time for this race team. We’ve been making a move lately in the standings and we’re in a good position these next two weeks to make a big impression.”
