Often known as the Z Man, Marcus Zukanovic had the perfect weekend come race day at round four of the Ebanc Trade Commodore Cup series at Mallala last month. After being outpointed in the last minute of qualifying, Zukanovic won all three races and moved from third in the title quest to the outright lead.
When then series leader Daniel Richert snatched away pole, Zukanovic was down. “The car won’t turn in like I want it too, it’s carrying a little too
much understeer,” he announced. Thoughts of going to new front tryes
were replace with a (lower) front ride height adjustment . . . and that
proved the winning edge.
In the meantime Richert had a weekend he will not want to reflect on.
He was checked at the first corner of the first lap, became embroiled
in an incident later in the lap to which he was penalised, and fell out
of contention later with a suspected blown engine.
“That’s it for us this year,” Richert declared “The engine is gone and
our season is over.” However once back in Melbourne, further
investigation found things were not as bad as previously thought. So
much so that Richert, now third in the series will be back in the hunt
for the 2006 series.
For Christian D’Agostin, the winner of round one in dominating style,
round four could have been so much better if he had not been hit by
Richert on the opening lap. “It was catch up from there and we were
able to get a podium finish in the third race,” he surmised.
With three solid seconds, Brett Holdsworth improved his standings from
fifth to third, David Gittus showed plenty of speed but was dogged by
being in the wrong place at the wrong time, Michael Graham showed true
competitiveness, and Tony Bates looked strong early before fading.
Round four proved to be a real order shuffle after an exciting Phillip
Island round three, so with greater numbers on hand this weekend for
Eastern Creek’s fifth outing, nobody will be comfortable or resting
easy.
