Appeal Puts Ryan Clear PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 07 July 2006
The best entry of the season will line up for the fourth round of the Shannons Australian Production Car Championship at Sydney’s Eastern Creek Raceway this weekend  – in the Nationals, the CAMS National Motor Racing Championships.

After an appeal against a race disqualification from round two was upheld, Shell/Armour Auto/DWR Petroleum Ford Falcon XR6 Turbo driver David Ryan will be looking to consolidate his lead in the APCC.

Ryan was gutted by the initial decision and took to the ensuing race at Symmons Plains with gutso, then backed up with a round win at the next round - Oran Park.

But he will have to keep a close eye on Holden driver Steve Briffa who showed that he is getting his new Time Mutual Finance Commodore SSZ up to speed with a first-up race win there. “We were surprised that we got the jump on everyone at Oran Park - and took a win. It was looking good in the second too, until a miss-fire side lined us,” Briffa said.

“We have that problem all sorted now and I think we should be able to give Ryan a real run for his money at the Creek” said Briffa.

At the helm of his InTune Motorsport Falcon XR8, John Houlder is another Class A competitor that will be out to prove he can run at the front of the pack after showing good speed at the previous two rounds.

For Leigh Mertens, 2006 has been a horror year. After moving from a Class C Proton Satria to a Class A Commodore for the new season, he has been plagued with reliability issues at each round.

Nick Dunkley’s season is improving at every round. After an ordinary opener at Wakefield Park, his form picked up at Symmons Plains and the subsequent Oran Park outing aboard the XR6 Turbo.

Eastern Creek will see the return of Chris Delfsma in his brand new Century 21 backed BF model XR8 after righting off his car in a heavy crash in Tasmania.

Also retuning to the championship is Alan Shephard in the Class B Thrifty Rentals Toyota Celica after engine dramas made him miss the last few rounds. Some of the best racing in the APCC has been between he and reigning outright and class champion Colin Osborne, which could be a highlight of this round.

Darren Best who has been running away with the Class C points in the Ford Focus, will have to work a bit harder this weekend as there are several Proton Satria GTi’s looking to spoil his winning run. The Citreon Xsara will also be back in the class with Brendon Cook taking up the drive in the little French two-door rocket.

The Trophy Class will see the regular and swift Adam Beechey out to keep his unbeaten record in tact but with the return of Stewart Riach in the BMW 323i and Matt Brady in his big AU XR8, Adam will have his work cut out over the weekend.
