Eastern Creek To Come Alive With Nationals Racing This Weekend PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 07 July 2006
SOME of the most competitive racing in Australian Motorsport will be conducted in Sydney this weekend when Eastern Creek International Raceway hosts the Sixth round of the 2006 CAMS National Racing Championships.

Cars from the Kumho Tyres Australian Formula 3 Championship, the STS Turbo Australian Performance Cars, the Kerrick Industrial Australian Sports Sedans, Shannon’s Australian Production Car Championship, Ebanc Trade Commodore Cup and a massive Formula Vee interstate challenge field will tear up the 3.9km circuit west of the CBD.

It will be the first time that the Nationals series will have visited Eastern Creek after prior visits to fellow NSW-based circuits Wakefield and Oran Park this season.

An 18-Car field will contest the fifth round of the Kumho Tyres Australian Formula 3 Championship, Sydneysider Chris Alajajian returning to the fold this weekend to take the challenge up to runaway series leader Ben Clucas, from England.

The Australian Drivers Championship / Gold Star Open Wheelers will compete with their best field of the year, the likes of Stuart Kostera and Matt Sofi joining exiting competitors Chris Gilmour, Leanne Tander, Lauren Gray and Michael Trimble, amongst others, this weekend.

Clucas leads the championship by 44 points after four rounds.

The STS Turbo Australian Performance Car championship will feature a high-powered battle between the Aussie V8 Muscle Cars and the Four-Wheel-Drive Mitsubishi Lancers, both formats expected to suit the Eastern Creel layout.

Eastern Creek Karting owner Garry Holt currently leads the championship driving his Mitsubishi Lancer Evo, whilst defending champion Peter Floyd will be looking to return to the top of the pecking order driving his HSV Commodore.

Six different makes and 12 different models are entered for round three of the Performance Car series this weekend.

The wheel to wheel racing of the Ebanc Trade Commodore Cup will back up after a bruising round at Mallala a fortnight ago with Marcus Zukanovic leading the championship in his 350hp V8 powered VS Commodore.

Contenders Daniel Richert, Christian D’Agostin and Brett Holdsworth will be looking to get one back on the series leader this weekend as over 20 cars go into hand to hand combat in the fifth round of what is evolving to be Australia’s most competitive one-make series.

The Shannon’s Australian Production Car Championship has a 20-car field entered to continue the battle for showroom standard cars from Ford, Holden, Proton, Honda, Toyota and more.

The current outright championship leader, Ford driver David Ryan, will be looking to extend his margin but is expected that Holden’s Steve Briffa will again be Ryan’s closest contender.

A massive field of over 40 cars have nominated for the Swarfega / Premier One Products Formula Vee Interstate Challenge, the second of a two-round battle on the Nationals Program.

The field includes leading competitors from right around Australia and will also include the national racing debut of Speed Skating Gold-Medal winning Winter Olympian Steven Bradbury.

The full program of practice, qualifying and racing will be held this weekend, July 8 - 9, at Eastern Creek Raceway. Tickets are available at the gate for only $15, which includes paddock and grandstand access, with kids under 13 free.
