Even
the great British weather couldn’t put a damper on the final
POWERnights of 2008 with a family audience of over 2000 people enjoying ten
action packed races and plenty of off track entertainment. The evening
finished on a high note with the teams and spectators enjoying 60 minutes of
live music courtesy of Soul Convention.
With
the sun still shining the evening got off to a great start with local drivers
James May from Towcester and Buckingham based Neil Cunningham having a
ding-dong battle in the Invitation Saloons. In his first ever race, James
May, driving a Seat Cupra, was given a lesson in defensive racing by
Cunningham in a Ford Mustang but a few laps from home May managed to squeeze
past the more experienced race and cross the finish line at the head of the
field. However a penalty for a jump start by the two leaders put them down
to second and third respectively, with Alec Hammond taking the win in the
Chevrolet Camaro. The second Saloon race of the evening had the same three
cars filling the podium positions in the same order, but this time the
winning Camaro had Graham Hathaway at the wheel.
Leicestershire’s
Will Schryver was gifted a win in the first Formula Ford race when Edward
Moore and Dave Connor tangled one corner from home while fighting for the
lead. In race two it was Schryver who threw away the win skidding off the
track 100 metres before the finish line as the rain made the track very
slippery. Matt McKillop was the grateful recipient of the winners trophy ahead
of Jeremy Unsworth and Dave Connor.
The
Ma5da Racing grid might’ve been the smallest of the evening but it
didn’t stop the competitors putting on an action packed show for the
spectators. Paul Sheard won the first encounter beating Tom Roche to the flag
by 0.1 seconds, the two cars crossing the line side by side with Jenifer
Garrett just a second adrift in third. Tom Roche held the upper hand in the
second encounter finishing ahead of the battling duo of Charles Plumley and
Jonathan Blake.
The
two Invitation Open Sports races had a frantic feel about them with so much
overtaking across the 27 car grid it was hard to know where to look first.
Mark Steward was the runaway winner in race 1 bringing home his Tiger RS6 14
seconds ahead of Ginger Marshall’s Bowlby and Leigh Parkes’
Nemisis. In a very wet second race Neil Cunningham grabbed his third podium
of the evening to take the chequered flag in the Peugeot 207 Spyder ahead of
Ginger Marshall and Fiona James.
The
mass grid of Toyota MR2’s provided some great racing for race 5 and the
final race of the POWERnights evening. Mark Jessop beat Patrick Mortell and
Steve Lumley to the flag and then in the rain with lights ablaze Jessop
repeated the feat in the final race of the day. Anthony Day overtook Eliot
Dunmore at the penultimate corner to claim second place.
