Steve Hill reinvigorated his
own title campaign and helped to setup an intriguing championship
position entering the final two rounds by winning round five of the
Kumho Tyres MSA British Rallycross Championship at Lydden on Monday
(August 25).
Supercar
Hill was
pipped to pole position for the Supercar A final by Pat Doran who
set fastest times in the second and third heats with his Fiesta ST.
Second fastest times in the first and third heats brought Hill on to
the front row between Doran and third qualifier Ollie O'Donovan who
was second fastest in the second heat and third fastest in the last
qualifier. Fastest time in the first heat had been set by Liam Doran
who was unable to match his performance later in the day after turbo
problems his his Ford RS200. Kevin Procter shared the second row
with Doran Jnr, championship leader Lawrence Gibson on the back row
of the grid with Andy Grant.
The latter pair were joined on the
back of the grid by Chris Langley who took a clear win in the B
final ahead of Tommy Graham, the Irishman having a troubled day with
his Ford Escort WRC that had engine management problems and a
puncture during the heats. Simon Horton claimed third place with his
Subaru Impreza, ahead of Kevin McCann's similar car and the Focus of
Dutchman Jan Langenberg. The only non-finisher of the race was David
Binks whose Mitsubishi Lancer suffered technical problems in the
second lap.
The A final was all action. Hill and Doran were close
in the first corner, but at the exit of the turn Doran took the
advantage and the lead. Behind him the rest of the field jostled for
position through the first couple of laps. Gibson was a casualty of
the close action, catching the course markers and going off the
track in the chicane. Losing half-a-lap before being able to rejoin
the race, Gibson lost so much time that he would fail to qualify for
the Superfinal, something that cost the round four winner the
championship lead.
Procter also lost out and ended his tough duel
with O'Donovan when his car spun in Chesson's Drift in the third
lap. The race order settled with Doran leading comfortably and
cruising towards the win. Hill struggled with steering that was
damaged in the first lap and eventually fell victim to O'Donovan who
found a tiny gap on the inside of the Mitsubishi driver entering the
Devil's Elbow late in the race. Langley worked his way through to
fourth place ahead of Liam Doran and Grant, Gibson the last finisher
but more than 30 seconds behind the winner.

SuperModified
The rain
showers that blew across the track in the middle of the day mixed
the order quite a bit, but in the dry conditions of the first and
third qualifying heats there was no beating James Bird who was
fastest in each and took pole position for the A final. The class
FTD also earned the Renault driver five bonus championship
points.
John Collins again enjoyed a good run in his Vauxhall
Tigra and was second fastest to Bird in the first and third races to
qualify second while Dave Bellerby was fastest in the second heat.
Bellerby was then third fastest in the third heat and completed the
front row starters in his Lotus Exige. Allan Tapscott and Mike
Turpin shared the second row of the grid while the last two direct
qualifiers were Ben Power and Michael Boak, both of who encountered
problems in the heats but managed to get their cars into the A
final.
The last grid place was taken by Mike Howlin who won
through from the B final where he took a clear win over Sean McAdden
and Gareth Wood. Bruce Bamber and Mark Watson were non-finishers in
the B final.
The A final was the most closely contested the class
has seen in recent years. Bird, Bellerby and Collins disputed the
lead in the first couple of laps, Collins moving ahead of Bellerby.
There was nothing to chose between the three and as they raced so
the rest of the pack closed in. Bellerby went ahead in the third lap
but then slid wide and Collins moved ahead. Boak had climbed to
third place and raced hard with Bellerby until a rear wheel fell off
his Audi TT in the last lap. The order changed again at the end of
the race when Bellerby slid off at Chesson's Drift and slipped back
to fourth place at Bird and Power moved ahead. Turpin finished fifth
ahead of Tapscott who was the last finisher as Howlin's Fiesta
suffered a driveline failure at the start of the race.

Stock Hatch
Julian Godfrey
completely dominated during the qualifying heats, setting fastest
time in each of the three races and securing pole position for the A
final. Ryan Lawford qualified second and had been second fastest to
Godfrey in the first and second heats. Class champion Tony Lynch
completed the grid. Fourth fastest in the first heat, Lynch's car
suffered a head gasket failure and his team worked hard to change
the item in time to get the car back on the grid for the third heat
in which Lynch was second fastest.
Phil Chicken and Tina Scott
shared the second row of the grid with their 1600/16v cars, Don
MacLeod and Mike Jones the last qualifiers. The class lost teenage
racer Joe Cunningham in the first heats after his Peugeot 106 rolled
heavily.
The A final was pretty straight forward, Lynch
leading from the start. Lawford held second place but was under
great pressure from Godfrey who moved ahead and then his sights on
Lynch. Over the last two laps the lead pair were very closely
matched, but Lynch held out to take a narrow victory. Chicken
finished fourth with Scott fifth, MacLeod a non-starter.

Superfinal
The Kumho
Tyres MSA British Rallycross Championship Superfinal included six
Supercars and two SuperModifieds in its eight-car grid and delivered
a great race. Again Hill and Doran fought over the lead in the first
corner, but this time both ran wide and it was O'Donovan who took
advantage, diving through to take the lead. Liam Doran joined the
leading group and made it a four-way battle but was again forced out
of the race when the propshaft in his RS200 failed. With O'Donovan
equal to Hill's every challenge, the order appeared settled, but
Hill played his master stroke in the last lap, mirroring O'Donovan's
move in the earlier A final and diving to the inside at the
left-handed Devil's Elbow to grab the lead. Doran immediately tried
to capitalise and follow Hill through, but O'Donovan defended
strongly and the two touched. This allowed Hill to draw out a small
lead from where he took the event win.
Grant and Langley
continued their good run in the event with fourth and fifth places,
Bird the top two-wheel drive in sixth place after Collins also
retired.
Bill Gwynne Rallyschool Junior
Rallycross Championship
The field was very evenly
matched and fastest time was taken by a different driver in each
heat; Matt Thompson fastest in the opening run, Samantha Thom then
going ahead in the second before Dan O'Brien topped the third heat
and gained the bonus points for setting the class FTD. At the end of
the heat, however, it was Thom who had delivered the best combined
performance, third fastest times in the first and third heats
helping her to pole. Joining Thom on the front of the grid were
Conor Flynn who had been second fastest in the second and third
heats, and Thompson who added third fastest time in the second heat
to his first heat fastest time.
The A final needed two starts,
the first developing into a great race before an accident put Jess
Gwynne out and brought a premature halt to the race. The restart did
not match the excitement of the first attempt, O'Brien cruising home
the clear winner after Flynn retired his car in the second lap. Thom
finished second while Brad Bailey earned his first podium finish in
third place where he was ahead of Kelly Bird and debutant Rebecca
Elliot.
BTRDA Clubmans
Championship
The BTRDA Clubmans Rallycross Championship
rejoined the BRC at Lydden. Attention in this, the seventh of nine
events in the Clubmans series, centered on the overall championship
battle between leading Stock Hatch contender Dave Martin and the top
Junior, Dan O'Brien.
The latter's day could not have had a much
worse start an incident in the first heat resulting in his car
rolling. Fortunately for O'Brien, damage was light and his team
managed to patch the car up to enable him to take part in the rest
of the event. O'Brien set fastest times in the second and third
heats and then won the Junior A final from pole position, Conor
Flynn and Brad Bailey completing the top three finishers.
Martin,
meanwhile, was second fastest in all three Stock Hatch heats,
chasing Darren Clark in the first and then playing second fiddle to
Richard Horton in the latter two races. Horton took pole for the A
final with Martin and Clark completing the front row. While Horton
continued his strong run and took the A final win with Clark second
and returnee Jackie Harris moving up to third place, Martin's luck
failed and he non-finished.
Gary Pusey gave his recently acquired
Peugeot 206 a test outing in the SuperModified category and, but for
a driveshaft problem which cost him a finish in the second
qualifying heat, dominated the class. Fastest times in the first and
third heats put Pusey on pole for the A final which he led
throughout.

Support race: RX150 Off Road
Racers
The RX150 Off Road racers made their first
appearance as a supporting category in the BRC at Lydden. There were
11 of the motorcycle-engined 'buggies' in the event, the category
completely dominated by young rally star Kris Meeke. Guesting in the
class, Meeke set fastest time in all three qualifying heats and took
a clear victory over Ollie O'Donovan in the A final where Steve
Mantle finished third.
