Lee Castle took a clean sweep of the race wins
for Wilson Brothers Racing at the third round of the Australian
Manufacturers Championship at Symmons Plains today.
Castle was pushed all the way to
victory in the opening 18 lap encounter by Mitsubishi Lancer Evo driver
Des Wall, and had to come from behind to win the second race in trying
conditions.
Castle made the best of the start in the first race, but had to work
hard to keep Wall at bay as the pair threaded their way through the
pack after the handicap start.
Wall however jumped into the lead in the final race, but a cunning dive
under brakes saw Castle retake the lead on lap 10, immediately before
light rain began to fall on the circuit making conditions on difficult
on the way to the finish.
The icing on the cake for Castle was setting the fastest race lap in race three.
For Castle, the weekend was by far and away his most competitive outing
after only five race meetings aboard the Wilson Brothers Racing Subaru
WRX Sti.
"They were a couple of really good races, and I'm very happy to be on top," said Castle.
"Any time you beat Des Wall to the finish in such close races is no
mean feat, and it was great to get there in the end of the day."
For team principal Cameron Wilson, the weekend was a highlight of the
season thus far after dominating the opening hour long mini enduro
yesterday.
"I'm absolutely stoked for Lee and the team to have such a strong result for the weekend," said Wilson.
"To get this sort of speed and competitiveness out of a five year old
Subaru WRX is testament to how well the team has been working, and it
really bodes well for the rest of the championship."
Queenslander Jake Camilleri came home third in the morning race, before
a horror run with a mechanical DNF in the last race, which could change
the scope of the championship.
George Miedecke was classified third in the final race aboard the Hyundai Tiburon.
Earlier in the day Wilson Brothers Racing Bathurst 12 hour driver James
Winslow wrapped up his first Australian Driver's Championship in
sensational circumstances when title rival Leanne Tander retired with
engine problems.
The race featured carnage, a safety car and wet weather, making the race and title win all the sweeter.
Wilson Brothers Racing have a well earned weekend off before the final
round of the Queensland CAMS State Championship at Morgan Park Raceway,
followed a week later by the penultimate round of the V8 Ute
Championship at Bathurst.
The Australian Manufacturers Championship concludes at Sandown in
November, where Wilson Brothers Racing will have a pair of Subaru WRX
Stis on the grid.
