The Brett Stevens Racing team has come away from Willowbank Raceway’s Spring Championships this weekend (26th–27th September) leading the 2 Group One National Drag Racing Championship brackets they competed in at the event.
Getting the team off to a flying start and leading from the front was reigning National Top Bike Title holder Troy McLean who headed straight to the top of the time sheets on his first run and stayed there throughout the entirety of Qualifying on the SP Racing Nitro Harley.
This was backed up with team mate Kim Stevens (no relation to Brett Stevens) nailing down the number 2 position on the Mack Trucks bike, with Brett Stevens in 5th for Jack Daniel’s Racing and Alex Borg rounding out the top 10 for Makita.
The team then showed their dominance in the category throughout the Elimination rounds with 3 out of the 4 Semi-Final positions filled with Brett Stevens Racing entries, before Kim Stevens went on to take the victory from Brett ‘The Boss’ Stevens himself in the winner takes all Final.
In Top Alcohol Brett Stevens was similarly successful, blasting away the opposition in the Kitten Car Care Products Funny Car to Top Qualify in a classy field. One of the standouts of the event, Stevens added to his successes when he was able to better his own National Speed Record which he re-set at 260.27mph (418.86 kph) on his way through the Eliminations to the Final.
However in bizarre and unfortunate circumstances he was denied from taking the win, in the short term at least, when on the run prior to the Top Alcohol Final against fellow Queenslander Steven Reed there were two major simultaneous engine explosions on the quarter mile strip.
With conditions becoming cold and dewy as evening got later, the track would have been unsuitable for racing the 3500 horsepower beasts after the cleanup, forcing the Final to be postponed to the next ANDRA Championship Drag Racing Top Alcohol round held at Willowbank Raceway (2nd-3rd January 2009).
QUOTES
Brett Stevens – Jack Daniel’s Racing Top Bike/Kitten Car Care Products Funny Car “It is a bit disappointing to not get the Final of Top Alcohol finished after we went so well throughout the entire event including resetting the National speed record, but in the end I think the correct decision has been made for safety purposes,” Brett Stevens said.
“We will still have the opportunity to finish off the business at Willowbank Raceway’s next round of the National Top Alcohol Championship in January and all of my ET’s and mph’s will also carry over for the bonus points.”
“Top Bike was successfully concluded prior to the explosions though and what a bracket that was for the team with three out of the four Semi-Final positions being filled by Brett Stevens Racing bikes.”
“It was great to get my Jack Daniel’s Racing Nitro Harley in the Final, but I would like to congratulate new team member Kim Stevens for taking the win for the team on our Mack Trucks entry.”
Troy McLean – SP Racing Top Bike “The SP Racing Nitro Harley felt really good this weekend, I’m really happy with how I performed Top Qualifying, taking home both the ET and mph bonus points and running a personal best top speed of 213.78 mph (344.05 kph),” McLean said.
“We had all brand new untested ignition systems on our Top Bikes so to be running these numbers straight up is very encouraging for the future.”
“I think things will only get better as the season goes on.”
Kim Stevens – Mack Trucks Top Bike “This is just fantastic to take the win for the Brett Stevens Racing team and Mack Trucks in the first fully completed round of the 2008/2009 Championship,” Kim Stevens said.
“The competition in Top Bike is just so tight now, but we have been able to step up to plate and deliver the goods this weekend.”
“I would like to thank Brett and Mack for the opportunity to get back in the riders seat full time and I hope to keep the ball rolling for the rest of season.”
Alex Borg – Makita Top Bike “After some early issues we had to sort out we really showed some great promise with the Makita Nitro Harley,” Borg said.
“We were back inside the top 10 but my plan now is to make my way up the field to deep inside the top 8 to challenge for the win with some consistent 6-second passes.”
“Next round of the ANDRA Championship Drag Racing Top Bike series is in Perth in November and I can’t wait to get back out on track.”
