he Reed Racing team were one of the
standout performers at the Spring Championships last weekend
(26th-27th September) held at Queensland’s Willowbank
Raceway, with both Steven Reed and Debbie Reed making it into the Elimination
rounds of the professional Top Alcohol bracket.
Steven Reed, who was sporting Swarfega
livery on his Funny Car in a one race deal, took his 3500 horsepower beast
straight to the top time sheets after the first Qualifier with a personal best
5.64 second pass, before eventually settling in the number 2
position.
Showing the team will really be a force
to be reckoned with in this year’s ANDRA Championship, he progressed through the
Eliminators with a stunning run of 5.6 second passes which included another
personal best 5.63.
A showdown then loomed against current
Champion Brett Stevens in the Final with Steven confident of another good
performance, however in unfortunate circumstances he was denied the immediate
chance of taking the win when on the run prior there were two major simultaneous
engine explosions on the quarter mile strip.
With the night time conditions becoming
cold and dewy, the track would have been unsuitable for racing the high powered
machines after the cleanup which forced the Final to be postponed to the next
ANDRA Championship Drag Racing Top Alcohol round held at Willowbank Raceway on
the 2nd-3rd January 2009.
“My Funny Car just keeps getting better
and better, we have got things to come together really well and are now one of
the quickest in the field,” Steven Reed said.
“People are starting to sit up and take
notice as we now also have the consistency to back up the times which is what
you need to perform well in the Championship.”
“It was really good for the team to
continue on from Sydney’s performances here at Willowbank and
show that it wasn’t just a one off, although it was unfortunate we didn’t have
the opportunity to take the win.”
“We will get our day though in January
where we will have the unique chance to take two wins at the one
event!”
Driving the team’s second Top Alcohol
entry, Debbie Reed overcame an early Qualifying scare that saw her go close to
flipping her Dragster after a huge wheel stand.
A late night by the team repairing the
damage though saw her make it back out for the third and final Qualifier on
Saturday to run the quickest pass of the session and nail down the number 6
position.
“My Dragster really hooked up well off
the start line in my second Qualifying run and the nose just kept going up,”
Debbie Reed said.
“I was able to get off the throttle to
stop it going right over, but it came down hard wrecking the front
end.”
“We were able to repair the chassis
damage and source the parts required to get back on track for Saturday and I was
able to run a solid 5.8 pass which got me into the Eliminations field before I
went out in the quarter-finals.”
“The plan now is for me to test the
team’s new second Funny Car and hopefully if all goes well this is what I will
have out on track at the next round of the Championship.”
