Formula Renault UK with Michelin Championship leader Patrick Hogan (Killiney, Co Dublin) set the quickest time in both sessions of the official test day held at Snetterton on Tuesday, 27th June. His time of 1min 05.250s (107.69mph) led the 29 drivers in the 3hr 30min morning session and he then improved to a mark of 1min 04.875s (108.31mph) in the afternoon.
Hogan, who leads the drivers’ standings by 34 points after eight of the 20 rounds, completed fewer laps of the 1.95-mile Norfolk circuit than most of his rivals and was obviously delighted to have topped the timesheets.
The AKA Lemac man commented: “It’s been another good day for me and once again the team has done a great job with the set-up of the car. I feel happy with the way I’m driving at the moment and will be confident in the races when we come here in August as well as the four rounds before then.”
Coles Racing’s Josh Fisher (Bridgwater) and Fortec Motorsport’s round eight winner Sam Bird (Claygate, Surrey) both featured in the top five of each session, just 0.3s behind Hogan on the combined standings. Manor Motorsport’s Valle Makela (Anston, Sheffield) was second quickest overall with a time of 1min 05.173 (107.82mph) after the lunch break. His team-mate, Franck Mailleux (Hull) missed the afternoon session following a heavy crash at Riches corner in the morning.
Jordan Oakes (Hopton, Norfolk) gave an impressive performance at his home circuit, just two days after winning round six of the Formula Renault BARC Championship at the same venue. The 17-year-old Eurotek Motorsport star lapped in 1min 05.656s (107.03mph) in the second session, good enough for 14th overall against more experienced drivers.
Nexa Racing’s Daniel Roos (Bishop’s Stortford) showed no signs of ill effects after his big accident in round eight at Knockhill, leading the B4 Group Graduate Cup contenders with a time of 1min 05.450s (107.36mph). Coles Racing’s Dean Smith (Wolverhampton) was second of the five Graduate Cup drivers in attendance, just 0.181s behind Roos.
Kris Loane and Tiffany Chittenden (Chislehurst, Kent) made their first appearance in Formula Renault UK this season driving for Coles Racing and Macob Motorsport respectively. Meanwhile, there was a welcome return to action for Falcon Motorsport’s Henry O’Friel, who has missed the last six rounds of the Championship through illness.
Rounds nine and 10 of the Championship take place at Croft circuit, North Yorkshire on 15th/16th July. The series then moves to Donington Park before returning to Snetterton for rounds 13 and 14 on Sunday, 13th August.
