António Félix da
Costa became Vice Champion of the Formula Renault Northern European Cup this
weekend, at the final round held in the legendary track of Spa-Francorchamps
in Belgium.
In the first race,
held in a dry track, António started from 4th position and had moved up to
3rd before the first corner. However, in that same corner he got hit by his
ex-team mate at Tony Kart and was left with a severely damaged car. Showing
his fighting spirit once again, he still got past Valtteri Bottas,
2008’s super champion, moving into 2nd place. With his car losing
power, he finished the race in 3rd place, conquering yet another podium.
The young driver
from Cascais started the second race from 7th place on the grid. He had
posted the 3rd fastest time in qualifying, but it was cancelled because it
was made while there were yellow flags on the track. After the valuable
points scored in the first race he maintained a controlled pace in the second
one, keeping with his strategy of securing his main objective for this season
– the Vice Championship.
“There were
many reasons to be happy this season, in which besides the vice-championship
I was the best rookie and scored a total of 10 podium finishes. I was also
lucky to have Valtteri Bottas as a team mate, a driver that will make
headlines in the future, and who contributed a lot to my progression. I stood
out this year and I am in a very good position to fight for the Formula
Renault Eurocup, in which I will participate next year”, commented
António.
António Félix da
Costa expects to have his racing program defined before the end of the month,
and can’t wait to take his prize for conquering the vice-championship
– a test with a World Series by Renault team which will take place in
Paul Ricard on November 5, 6 and 7.
António concluded: “None
of this would have been possible without my sponsors, the support of my
family and the contribution of this extraordinary team, Motopark Academy, to
whom I offer my deep gratitude.”
