Bundamba grandmother Terri Sander will join her two passions this
weekend when the drag racing breast cancer survivor pays tribute to
those who have suffered alongside her at Willowbank Raceway this
Saturday October 11.
Round Two of both the Street and PowderPuff series at Willowbank
Raceway will take place in the company of 100 Pink Lady Silhouettes, as
Sander and her helpers host a Mini-Field of Women event at the track.
Mini-Field of Women events are designed to pay tribute to
women affected by breast cancer, with the silhouettes serving as a
powerful reminder of the human reality behind the 36 women diagnosed
with breast cancer every day in Australia, while spreading awareness of
the projects the Breast Cancer Network of Australia undertake to assist
those dealing with the disease.
For once, Sander won’t be hitting the track as she will instead be
focusing her efforts on spreading the message of BCNA, although her
easily-recognisable ‘Mama’s Toy’ Rover will be on display near their
set-up at the base of the Control Tower.
“The Mini-Field of Women is all about paying tribute to
those who have experienced breast cancer,” said Sander, who was only
the fifth woman at the time to claim a prestigious Gold Christmas Tree
at the 40th Australian Nationals event when she won the SuperStreet
eliminator at Willowbank in 2004, the year after her breast cancer
diagnosis.
“We also hope to spread the message that those diagnosed with
breast cancer can find all the information they need to help them
through their tough times from Breast Cancer Network Australia, while
taking gold coin donations and selling BCNA pink lady badges and pink
lady key-rings to raise funds for programs to support those affected by
breast cancer throughout Australia."
BCNA CEO and breast cancer survivor, Lyn Swinburne, the brain child
behind the Field of Women concept which has now spread internationally,
believes Mini-Fields are an important way of linking people together
and paying tribute to local women.
“This is an issue close to so many women throughout Australian
communities. By honouring these women and showing our support we can
show them they are not alone,” said Ms Swinburne.
Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA) is the peak national
organisation for Australians personally affected by breast cancer. BCNA
aims to inform, empower, represent and link together people whose lives
have been affected by breast cancer, while connecting more than 194
breast cancer member groups and over 28,000 individuals across the
country. If you or someone you love has been recently diagnosed with
breast cancer, please call Breast Cancer Network Australia on 1800 500
258 or visit www.bcna.org.au to order a free My Journey Kit.
Willowbank Raceway is Queensland's Premier Drag Racing Facility, located approximately 40 minutes out of Brisbane in Ipswich.
