TV CABLE ENDS QUALIFYING HOPES FOR IRWIN RACING PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 10 October 2008
IRWIN Racing’s Marcus Marshall will start from 22nd position on the grid for Sunday’s Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 after an unusual incident ended any hopes of starting further up the grid. On his fastest lap Marshall was charging down the Mount Panorama circuit when he ran over a television cable that had fallen onto the circuit from a ‘remote flying camera’ system.

The session was stopped immediately and the delay in retrieving the cable also affected the re-starting of the session.

Marshall had just one flying lap to set his time, finishing just 0.15 of a second out of the top-20 and the next segment of qualifying.

“What can you say,” said Marshall.

“I had just gone passed the timing split and we were on a fast one. Then I came through the Dipper and ran over the cable. I really didn’t know what to think, but I was on such a good lap I charged on. Then halfway down Conrod Straight they stopped the session and I had to return to the pits.

“It was the second red flag for the session and on both occasions we were on fast laps.

“Nonetheless we can now get our head around the big race on Sunday.

“The car is very good in race conditions. We can go and do our own thing in the race and get ourselves up towards the front when it counts.”

Matt Halliday had time in the IRWIN Racing Ford this morning. However, this was only limited due to a heavy accident that involved Paul Weel and Chris Pither. A long delay meant Halliday only got seven laps in the car.

“Despite only having limited time in the car I was very happy with it,” said Halliday.

“I have driven this track plenty of times, so it was not about learning the circuit.

“Some more time in the car in tomorrow’s one-hour practice will be more than enough come Sunday’s race.

“I feel that we can do a very good job on Sunday and I will not be surprised if we are in a good position come the end of the race.”

IRWIN Racing Engineer Marcus Clarke was pleased with the team’s progress despite qualifying in 22nd.

“We do have a good race car,” said Clarke.

“When Marcus said he ran over a TV cable I couldn’t believe it, but this place does provide plenty of challenges!

“Our major focus has been the race package and with another hour on the track tomorrow we will be set.

“Both drivers have done an excellent job this weekend and I’m sure that will carry over to the race.

“We have a number of options with strategy and I’m sure we can turn heads with a strong result Sunday afternoon.”

Tomorrow’s one-hour practice session starts at 10am.

Editors Note: In the above press release the term 'fly-cam' was used to describe a remotely operated camera.  I have been asked to clarify this by Flycam Camera Systems.

"Our company Flycam Camera Systems Ltd did not in any way have any anything to do with this incident. It was in fact a new US based system called "BATCAM". As we rely on our 100% saftey record for our jobs we request a full clarification on this imediatley or we will be taking a very legal view. We have however supplied Flycam units in the past 2004 - 2007 with great success but this year we found to be to expensive so a BATCAM was implimented by another company."
