Irwin battle to top 15 finish at Bathurst 1000 PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 12 October 2008
IRWIN Racing Marcus Marshall and Matt Halliday have come through to finish the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 in 14th position after a day-long battle at Mount Panorama. Marshall started the race and jumped from his 21st starting position to be 19th on the opening lap. He climbed to 17th before handing over to Halliday.

The opening 74-laps went safety car free, with the IRWIN Racing Falcon falling off the lead lap.

With the leaders choosing to pit, the IRWIN entry was back onto the lead lap and on the pace.

Through strategy the IRWIN Falcon climbed to eighth before the team decided to stretch the fuel window.

The calculation came up literally 30 metres short with Marshall stopping just before the pit box on lap #124.

Halliday jumped back in for the run to the finish, but this time an untimely safety car put the IRWIN team down a lap.

With debris littering the circuit, the front radiator area became clogged and the team had to make an extra stop. Some of the debris made its way into the throttle body and Halliday was forced to nurse the car home with a sticking accelerator.

Despite the late race dramas, Halliday kept out of any trouble and brought the car home in 14th.

“I am pleased with that result,” said Marshall.

“We showed plenty of determination today and we stood up to the challenge.

“That was hard work. It was very warm in the car and that long green-flag period at the start of race didn’t allow for any rest.

“We got back on the lead lap and went on the attack. I had some tyre issues and our pace was affected.

“Fuel conservation was very important and to come up just 30-metres short was quite incredible.

“This place is very tough and a result in the top half of the field is a true testament to that.”

Matt Halliday put in a very strong drive, including the challenging finish.

“I’m pleased for everyone on the team,” said Halliday.

“I was very pleased with my first stint and we were looking very strong.

“The car got pretty hot at the end and with a sticking throttle I really had to drop the pace and bring it home.

“The crew did an awesome job at keeping me focused and I was pleased to finish another tough Bathurst weekend.”

IRWIN Racing engineer Marcus Clarke was pleased with the overall result.

“We are very happy with that result,” said Clarke.

“There were so many challenges throughout the race, that getting to the end sometimes is an achievement in itself. To come home 14th in a very strong field is very satisfying.

“Our other team car from Fujitsu Racing was ninth, so overall for our entire organisation it has been a well deserved result.

“There are only a handful of days back at the workshop before we head to the Gold Coast Indy. We can go about focussing our attention on that event straight away.”

The Nikon Indy 300 on the Gold Coast is 23-26 October.
