HOGAN HOLDS NERVE TO EXTEND CHAMPIONSHIP LEAD
Patrick Hogan (Killiney, Co Dublin) extended his lead in the Formula Renault UK with Michelin Championship after two top-five finishes in rounds seven and eight at a rain-soaked Knockhill on Sunday, 18th June. The AKA Lemac driver handled the tricky conditions well in both races, which were held as part of the Renault Race Day, to finish fifth and third.
The Championship leader opens a 33-point advantage over round seven winner Sebastian Hohenthal (Northampton), while Hohenthal’s Fortec Motorsport team-mate Sam Bird (Claygate, Surrey) climbs two places to sixth after winning round eight, a race shortened to just seven laps after a major accident involving Nexa Racing’s Daniel Roos (Thetford, Norfolk).
Roos was accelerating down the main straight of the 1.30-mile Scottish circuit and due to the spray, was unable to see James Sutton (New Barnet, Herts) and Peter Rees (Pangbourne, Berks) slowing to enter the pitlane. Roos hit the back of Rees’ car at more than 100mph before overturning but walked away completely unharmed thanks to the strength of the Formula Renault 2.0 car.
The incident brought an immediate red flag, handing the win to pole-sitter Bird
