2005 National Rally Champion Paul Bird has confirmed he will be contesting the 2006 Shannon Holdings Rallycross Superprix at his local circuit of Croft near Darlington this forthcoming weekend (28/29 October).
After clinching the title last year, the Penrith businessman announced he was scaling down his rallying activities in order to concentrate on re-establishing his Stobart Honda British Superbike Championship team which he has done this season, but the decision to try his arm at the latest motorsport discipline to come his way was made after a deal was struck to drive Belgian Edwin Geraerts Division One specification Ford Focus on the biggest event on the UK Rallycross calendar.
“I’ve not done as much driving this year as I’d have liked so the chance to get behind the wheel of the most powerful car I’ll have ever driven was one I couldn’t resist. I’ve been and had a look at Croft today and liked what I saw so you can rest assured I’ll be giving it my all come the Superprix. It looks like it can get a bit physical at times which doesn’t bother me, that’s what motocross is all about so I’m expecting some ‘door-handling!” said Bird.
With names such as 13 times European Champion Kenneth Hansen from Sweden in the starting line up in his Citroen and defending Superprix and newly crowned British Champion, Irishman Christopher Evans (Opel Astra) other names include Polish champion Jacek Ptaszek (Toyota Corolla), Irishmen John McCluskey (Citroen) and Helmut Holfeld (Ford) and the Saabs of Andrew Jordan and Ollie O Donovan, it means rookie Bird will have to work hard to add to his list of successes.
Meanwhile, Bird is expecting to announce his riders for the 2007 British Superbike Championship season at a Press Conference to take place within the next two weeks.
