Glenfords Racing Carrera Cup team have had an emphatic victory at the Gold Coast with Alex Davison, in the Glenfords-DeWalt GT3 claiming all three wins, pole position and a new lap record in a superb weekend for the whole team.
Team mate Jonathon Webb (Glenfords-Makita) also had a strong weekend with a fifth for the round while David Wall (Glenfords-Hitachi) came seventh to again have all three Glenfords cars comfortably inside the top ten.
Qualifying saw Davison take pole position in the Glenfords-DeWalt with a time of 1:53.7053, while Webb took a strong fourth (1:54.7968) and Wall, who had never raced at the Gold Coast street circuit before was impressive with seventh and a time of 1:55.5996.
Race one saw Davison lose the lead off the start but only briefly as he regained the lead on the first lap, while Webb lost one position for fifth position off the grid as did Wall who was eighth.
Webb settled in behind Jim Richards and settled into a race long battle for fourth position while Davison out front was never challenged and built a commanding lead.
Wall found himself in a tight contest with Tony Quinn before his pressure helped force an error from Quinn who out the safety car after an incident on lap six.
With the race going green, a final lap dash would determine the winner and again Davison showed his class holding on to take a well deserved victory.
Webb was unable to find a way around Richards and finished a strong fifth while Wall finished eighth in his Gold Coast debut.
Race two saw Davison hold the lead into the first chicane ahead of David Reynolds, while Webb settled into sixth with team mate Wall immediately behind.
The race settled and with the two team mates, Webb and Wall, in unison in sixth and seventh, Davison maintained his dominance over the weekend out the front.
However, all three drivers were forced to finish the race under the safety car due to an incident on the back straight on lap six, resulting in another win to Davison, including a new lap record of 1:53.9104.
Again all three Glenfords Carrera Cup cars had finished well inside the top ten, reflecting the overall strength of the three car team.
The team had Saturday off and with the final race nearing, Davison was keen to clean sweep the round, one thing the team had yet to achieve.
Davison would again start from first while Webb in the Glenfords-Makita Cup Car was sixth and Wall seventh.
A carbon copy of race two saw Davison hold the lead into the first chicane ahead of Reynolds, while Webb was sixth before the unlucky Wall, in the Glenfords-Hitachi Porsche fell to the rear of the field after a car spun directly in front of him, forcing the rookie championship leader to halt to avoid running into his rival.
Forced to make his way through the field, Wall skillfully avoided further damage when another car spun in front of him.
A safety car was brought out as Wall was again forced to avoid the carnage and watch his team mates drive away.
The class of Davison in the Glenfords-DeWalt GT3 was evident as he again stretched out a lead on the restart while Webb was working over Rodney Jane looking for fifth position however with the race time running out the first lap of the restart proved to be the final.
Davison made it three wins from three starts on the streets of the Gold Coast to take a highly impressive round win.
Webb challenged and held sixth to finish fifth for the round while Wall was unfortunate to finish near the rear of the field on the final race but still came away with an impressive eight for the round on his debut.
However with the race less than 75% of the original distance, the points for this race were not allocated, a situation that hurt Davison in his championship quest, but assisted Wall who was unlucky in the final race.
The round win allowed Davison to reel in a huge 72 points on arch-rival Craig Baird in the fight for the 2006 championship which concludes at Phillip Island, 8-10 December.
Jonathon Webb remains in fifth place in the series while Wall has risen to seventh and retains his lead in the Rookie of the Year chase.
Driver Quotes:
Alex Davison
"It's great to get a clean sweep, it's something we have been aiming for all year so it is really satisfying."
"The car was really something special.I've said it all year but the guys have really given me a great car and I think it shows with our pace out there.I was pleased my starts got better and better this weekend as well.
"It was disappointing not to get the points in the final race, particularly if the championship comes down to a small amount of points, but there really isn't anything we can do about it so we'll just focus on the final round and go for the win at all costs."
Jonathon Webb
"I was pretty happy with my round this weekend, we've come away with the car in perfect condition which is always a bonus at a track like this and we had good speed all weekend."
"I'd like to get off the line a little better but apart from that I think we were solid all weekend and the team again has shown we can have all three cars up the front which is a great result."
David Wall
"The weekend was going really well until that final race when we were in the wrong place at the wrong time, but in the end there were no points for the race so that helped me a bit."
"It was my first time here at this street circuit and it can be pretty daunting but I think I learnt it pretty quickly and was on the pace pretty much from the outset which was pleasing.
"The goal now is to try and seal the Rookie title at the final round which would be a great way to finish off the season."
Andy McElrea, Team Manager
"We're thrilled with Alex's clean sweep and pole for the weekend, it was a superb effort."
"It was disappointing the officials weren't aware that one more lap would have made it a points scoring race but on the upside it was helpful for David's Rookie of the year chance so it is a little bitter sweet.
"David (Wall) again did a strong job and we really want him to win the rookie title and to have our guys chasing both the championship and rookie championship is a fantastic result.
"All guys were under strict instructions not to damage the cars so they were all driving knowing they had to be smart with their cars and they did that perfectly and were still fast and still delivered the results.
We'll be all out at Phillip Island and it will be Jonathon's (Webb) final round in the Carrera Cup so that will also be special, he's one of very few drivers to have been there from the start."
