HOHENTHAL AND HOGAN SECURE FRONT ROW AT THRUXTON
Sebastian Hohenthal (Northampton) and Patrick Hogan (Killiney, Co Dublin) secured front row grid slots for rounds five and six of the Formula Renault UK with Michelin Championship, with both men claiming their first pole position of the season.
Fortec Motorsport’s Hohenthal set a time of 1min 10.133s midway through the first 20-minute qualifying session, beating AKA Lemac’s Hogan into second place by 0.252s. Hogan’s team-mate and Championship leader Jeremy Metcalfe (Fleet, Hants) was third at his home circuit, a further 0.910s adrift.
Roles were reversed in Saturday’s afternoon session as Irishman Hogan posted a time of 1min 11.049s and although he only completed six laps, it was enough to hold off his competitors. Swede Hohenthal came within 0.031s of snatching pole before settling for second, while Sam Bird (Claygate, Surrey) added third place to his ninth place grid slot for round five.
Fabio Onidi (Northampton) led the six B4 Group Graduate Cup contenders in both sessions. The Fortec Motorsport driver will start one place ahead of team-mate Bird in round five and is 12th on the grid for round six.
Scorpio Motorsport’s David Epton (Fleet, Hants) also impressed at his home circuit in just his third qualifying session of the season. The 25-year-old set the 13th quickest time in the morning session but improved to claim fourth spot for round six.
Commenting on the day’s qualifying, the two pole-sitters were both in confident mood. Hohenthal said:
